Oh man HELP! Bolt on the loose!!!!!
oh SH!T!!!
I took the carb I'm to replace off! And droped a 1/2" nut down the intake and I guess into the piston camber How can I get this out???? Take the sparkplugs out? Take the intake off? No not the heads! Help!

Oh H*ll.... I would try a few things before I got out a wrench. Try a shopvac or see if you can fish a magnetic parts retriever down in there. If you are lucky it didn't make it into a chamber.

What ever you do, don't turn the motor over - it's very possible to bend a valve this way.
It's probably not in the cylinder yet. That's the last place I'd look. Try a mirror, light and a magnet. It's likely to be near the carb opening. The worst thing you'll need to do is to take off the intake - it's really not that bad. Be careful if you do not to let this nut fall further down into the block. If it made it all the way to a valve, it'll be sitting right there where you can get it with the intake off. Good luck. |

never had this problem before but this is what I would try (after the above), disconnect battery, remove plugs, rotate engine by hand to bring each piston up to top one at a time and sweep across the piston with a magentic tool through the spark plug hole, do each one and see if it can be located.
Just today I broke a pair of channel lock pliers and the nut went downt the distributor hole (had dist. out, didn't plug hole with a rag or something) luckily found it with a magnetic tool. good luck

That 5/16 nut is going to be big enough that it probably wouldn't fall through if the valve was open anyway.
It is probably still in the intake tract somewhere. Fish it out with a magnet and a flashlight. If your intake is aluminum, you can tie a magnet to a string and fish it in and out of all 8 ports. Worst case, you may have to pull the intake. I wouldn't rotate the engine over under any circumstances. My opinion.

I'll have to get a magnet fishing pole!
What do you guys have? Magnet taped to a string would do it? I looked down as far as I could in each hole and Nothing! I'll try the magnet. If that doesn't work I'll take the intake off and dump it out! Just need a magnet and a intake gasket now. |

I have several Snap-On magnets with telescoping handles for this kind of thing.
If you intake is aluminum, a string and magnet would be great as it would slide down each port until it found the nut. On an iron intake though, the magnet would stick and not slide at all. That's when you'd need a magnet on a stick or coat hanger or something so you can snake it down each passage.

Make sure the magnet is FIRMLY attached to whatever you are fishing it down there with. Wouldn't want to hear that you had to fish a nut and a magnet out

This might be a good application for building a simple electro magnet, then you could fish it down in all the way to the valve w/o it trying to stick to the inside of the intake runner ??

got it with a stick from the garden, taped to a leather shoe lace
with some duct tape! The magnet I got from a name tag from Burger King! The one side of the magnet is plastic so it slides darn good! Thanks for the help I ws worried. |

Man it was good to hear you got that thing. I had a screw fall out of the bottom of a quadrajet one time and it put a hole through the side of a cylinder wall. Congrats on fishing it out.

Glad to hear that you got it out.
One method I have used is to put a blob of grease on the end of a screwdriver, and use the stickiness of the grease to hold on to the reclusive nut/bolt/screw/washer. You have to wait until everything is cold, or the grease melts when contacted with something hot. Magnetic retrievers in cast iron intakes ususally result in a fight between the magnet and anything that is made out of iron.

glad you got it out. I did the same thing when I was in high school. only it was a washer I didnt know when in the intake and started the motor. $50 worth of gaskets later I had it fixed.
