Wanted . . . crew cab 4X4 diesel
I am looking for a 85 - 91 GMC or Chevy Crew Cab 4X4 with a diesel engine. It can be either a 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton. I have been looking for a year or so with no luck. Does anyone know where there is one located? Thanks in advance for any help.

I want one, too.Just made your search twice as hard.LOL!I`m not in the market. But if I ran across one,I`d have to find a way to snag it.Try going on thedieselpage.com or steelsoldiers.com.The military had a few.Good luck

have a link?? maybe they are GSA vehicles, as the CUCV manual has no mention of crewcabs anywhere..
the military do use new body style crew cabs as GSA vehicles. but havent seen a 73-87 (91)... Last edited by Prerunner1982; 01-17-2005 at 04:42 PM. |

sorry, they aren't CUCV's but they are air force trucks. Usually on GL always at air force bases. No link now, maybe in the next couple weeks.
On another note: I do have a 4 door for sale. Was a diesel. Now its a project. Would like to get 1800 for it. Axles were supposed to be 4.56 but they are 4.10's. Last edited by muddobber40; 01-18-2005 at 12:11 AM. |

Seems to me there would be plenty of people ready to unload their 6.2 or 6.5 diesel trucks. You would think some of those would be crew cabs if they have not already been converted to gas.
Not bashing the 6.5 but it just seems like pre-Duramax GM diesel fan club is pretty small. I actually like the 6.5L now that AM General is building the engine rather than GM Powertrain. AMG has done a lot of internal structural upgrades, etc although it is still not a Cummins, Powersmoke or even Durasmack.. If only the Stanadyne injection pump would have not been such a terd the engine would not have gotten such a bad wrap. FYI…the 6.5L is still in production today. In 2001, GM sold the 6.5L production, engineering, etc to AM General (Contrary to popular belief, AM General is NOT part of GM.) After the 2001 sale of the 6.5 to AMG, AMG then created a new division called GEP. (General Engine Products). Brand new GEP 6.5L Optimizer engines can found in H1 Hummers and Workhorse Custom Chassis commercial step vans. For 2006, GEP will offer the 6.5L with a Bosch Direct Injection engine found only in the Workhorse Chassis and Hummer H1.

This thread is about wanting a 6.2 not unloading. Some people have had failures with the Detroit/Allison diesels, but only a few compared to how many are out there. There`s a website full of a loyal following of over 10,000 and plenty more that never heard about the site. Not to mention Uncle Sam and USPS.Gotta figure, these engines were concieved in another era,put into production 23 years ago when fuel economy was a major objective. These aren`t as much for heavy-hauling like the current Big-3,but is a damned good powerplant for a LT.Ask Jim Allen how he likes his Blazer.Stanadyne is a good pump. The problems are in the support system of the electronic DS4.Even GM has been mis-diagnosing as bad pumps at a huge expense.I`ve owned an`84K/30,`86Blazer,and`91K/20 Sub w/6.2.Then a`92K/3500 and a`95K/2500 6.5TD.I put a PeninsularMarine300hpTD/MFI in the`95.That uses the GEP block.Nobody believes the 300hp(never dynoed)`cause it feels like more.Looks like more, too, when it`s dustin`Power Strokes,Cummins,Dmaxs.Granted, you can get alot more out of those 3.But,after spendin`$45Gs,it don`t leave alot of playin`money for most.Like I`ve said before,"anybody want to get rid of their 6.2/6.5,you can give it to me".

I work for an OEM and can attest all powertrains have failures albeit Cummins, Navistar, Mercedes, GEP or GM powertrain. Some more than others but they all have failures. I am on your side with a fondness of the 6.5 as well, but disagree with you on one item. The Stanadyne pump is not a good pump…period. And I have the warranty data to prove it. Will I share it…no. And yes, dealers have misdiagnosed pump failures for years. The most common pump “failure” is really the pump driver module although dealers replace the entire pump but in the grand scheme of things pump related failures on a 6.5’s are tenfold that of a Cummins, Duramax, Navistar or Cat. Especially on an electronic pump opposed to a mechanical pump as the military uses. Stanadyne’s wonderful reputation is exactly why GEP is will be changing to Bosch for 06’ for military and civilian use.

The Stanadyne DB2 is as good a pump as any.All but my`95 had/has one(240,000mi.on the one in my`92,untouched).The electronic DS4 had problems due to the PMD being mounted to the IP.The idea was to cool this electronic devise with the flow of fuel through the IP.Doesn`t work.Instead, the PMD heats the fuel causing poor lubricity, then premature pump failure. In turn, the PMD goes uncooled and being located between the block and intake manifold on top of the engine puts it in a "hot" location. This causes premature PMD failure. So,round`n`round we go.Till they came up with the remote mount/heat sink "PMD-Cooler".There`s about a 60deg.drop in temp by mounting to the top of the manifold. Also, now the pump goes un-heated,so it lasts like it should. My PMD went first, replaced it using PMD-Cooler.Never had a problem from my IP in the 130,000mi.I ran it.Just sold it w/PMD & cooler to a guy with a`95.

I have seen what appeared to be CUCV Crew Cabs.I suppose they could have been built to appesr to be CUCVs.I`m not talking about OD or Camo paint jobs.I mean authentic to the detail.Don`t know about the 24v system.I have a Suburban I thought about doing that to.It`s already a 6.2.Not many know about the Dually PUs.Are they in the manual?I`ve seen these, too.I`d like to put the truck axles under my son`s CUCV Blazer, may end-up mine.It would get a lift & big rubber.
