Talking 3 Speed Floor Shifter info needed

Does it matter what kind of floor shifter I get. I am looking to get rid of the 3 on the tree and go to a floor shifter.........

Just curious if a Universal from Autozone would work or would it be better to
buy a name brand type..
Any help would be great.......

Chad, I've used the cheaper shifters before and they usually work OK as long as you don't get too rough with them. The main thing is to make sure and get one for a pickup with a shift stick long enough to shift without having too reach down. Also, if you're using a bench seat make sure to mount it far enough forward so as not to hit the seat in any position. If you're using buckets, then it really doesn't matter. One more thing, on most of these old trucks you have to flip the levers on the transmission upside down or your shift pattern will be backwards. Hope that helps. Good luck.

I found a conversion kit in the Summit Racing catalog just this morning, it was an old catalog though, that is made by Hurst. It actually says in the description that it is for converting old trucks with a 3 speed manual on the tree to a floor shifter. It was resonably priced at just under 80 bucks too!

I would look at the Hurst Mastershift 3 speed. It is comparable in quality to the Hurst Competion plus 4 speeds. It has the longest stick height of all the Hurst 3 speeds and fits better than the Indy series shifter. The price on it is around $150-$175.

Well.......I unhooked the old linkage from the steering column....

climbed under the truck and attatched the new mounting hardware to the tranny, and then started lining up to cut the hole......

HOWEVER....

The hole where the shifter will come out is right in front of my seat.....I mean literally, it almost hits the front of the seat.....

NOT EXACTLY where I thought it would come out........

I will post a pic on Monday, but this is not what I wanted.....

Does anybody have a solution on how to fix this, or should I can the whole idea....

I thought the shifter would be in the middle of the hump.....

just shows what happens when ya try something new i guess......

Does the shifter mount to a bracket that bolts to the tailshaft housing attaching brackets on the transmission? If it does, you might be able modify the bracket to move the shifter forward.

Every floor shifter (3-4 total) I have installed has ended up close to the seat and on the left side of the trans tunnel. Normally you can tweak the mounting brackets to get it to work.

Hey Beater 10................i Put A Muncie 4 Speed In My 65 Burban And Had The Same Problem You Have..............all I Did Was To Check Out All Of The Shift Handles That Was Available From Hurst And Bought The One That Came Out Of The Floor Sraight And Then Went Forward And THEN Back Up..............i'll Try To Post You Some Pictures Of This...............i Ended Up Buying A Three Speed Shifter With The Right Handle............hope This Helps........hemmit

i put the hurst indy kit in my truck last year. it works great. it has a dogleg(bent) shift
arm. have stock ball knob with proper shift pattern on it & works good with bench. i pulled down the crossmember for conveince & cleaned up & got ebrake working good at same time. if weather breaks i will try to get some pics above & below for you. later this summer it will be for sale as i just got a tranny (auto for old lady). will be swapping when i do frame off. jw

I think I know the handle you are talking about, it is about 15-16" tall and is used on the Master shift 3 speed and the Chevy truck 4 speed shifter applications. It looks similar to the stick used on the Indy 3 speed shifters.

Only application it is bad on is the 47-54 trucks. You end up having the shifter under your leg in reverse.

I am hoping to use that shifter handle with a competition plus 4 speed, and the installation kit for the Street Super Shifter for a Chrysler with a New Process. I have a A833 4 speed OD I want to put into my 84. Converting an auto truck to stick has been a real pain. I like the 60-66 trucks but in the Midwest they seem to rust from just sitting. I shifted to the 73-87 trucks since they are easier to find parts for.

The shift kit that I was talking about is different than the one that Apache mentioned. It is part number HUU-3666809. It seems to be taller with the dogleg bend like was mentioned above. Do a search on Summit for Hurst and then click on manual shifters and check out the selection. Hopefully they will let you exchange.

Actually there are a couple three speed shifters.
HUU-3666809 - One is just mentioned
HUU-3663179 - Possibly shorter with more bend
HUU-3667271 - Again possibly shorter than the first but with less bend than the one above.
All three are labled as MasterShifter w/

Interesting note but I found that Mr. Gasket runs Hurst, didn't know that before, and that the Mr. Gasket kit is like 40 bucks or so cheaper from AutoZone, or ebay, and looks like it has more bends to clear the bench seat. Check it out on their website.

I like the handle, it has a dogleg bend, so I am trying to modify the bracket a little bit to move it forward......hopefully, I can look at in a day or so....

I'm ready to get the truck driving again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a Hurst Indy 3 speed floor shift kit in my 67 and it's works great. I was sick of all the column hang up, and I haven't had 1 problem with the floor shift. It only takes about 45 minutes to install and a bit of time to get the right adjustments, but you will wonder how you ever drove without it . I am now building a Rat rod shifter for it so it will give it a more unique look

i bought a hurst 3spd shifter put it rite in my 70 with no problems.
paid 260.00 for it,when i lived in TN.had to order it thru a parts house in crossville where i lived.but it went rite in with no trouble.if you want it let me know,because
i have no use for it now,seeing that i'm going to 4spd in my truck.i live in jacksonvile fl now.

After slews of online reading, I think I have the correct part # for the Hurst Master shift install kit in our trucks. Part #3677143 seems to be the install kit. Can anybody confirm this?

I'd suggest go to O'Reillyauto.com, enter that part number, when it comes up look under the "Compatibility" tab. It lists 416 Chevy vehicles it fits, along with 222 GMC vehicles. It comes down to which transmission you have. It seems to indicate anything from 66-70 and a few up to 1981. In truth just about any kit with enough pieces can be made to work on these old 3 speeds. In high school when I was 17 I adapted a 57 Chevy Dragfast shifter to work on my torque tube 54 Chevy. It just took a bit of creativity to make it fit. And it worked perfectly. So well in fact I blew up the transmission 13 different times in my senior year. Those tiny little boxes just weren't meant to be beat senseless by a teenager.

The column shifter protected the transmission as it was so sloppy the transmission was insured from abuse. With a direct acting side shifter, the transmission did what it was told immediately, even if that required twisting mainshafts in half, blowing gears out through the case, or scattering parts inside the box.

That's the issue. Its a 63 chevy truck, 1969 chevy big block and a 1968 borg warner t-16 trans, so I'm a hybrid and doesn't give me the option I need. I believe that 3677143 will work for my app though. Believe it or not, the Hurst website was no help. After some search engines, I eventually landed at O'reilys site which is where I cam up with the part #. I found another site that sells the install kit for $30 cheaper than everyone else. I've put off wanting a floor shifter, but I think unless I want to spend a lot of hours converting to a column shift for a trans that was never installed in this truck that a floor shifter is the way to go. I had an "Indy" shifter in a 63 chevy c-10 I had back in 1996 and hated the damn thing. Would bind up all the time and I'd be under the truck getting it unstuck. Swore I'd never use another one. Some guys like them and have no issues....I wasn't one of them. But I do like the look of the Master shift and plan to go this route.
