Body swap legalities....
Brought the 79 2wd K5 home yesterday...still on the trailer.
Now i need info on the body swap...i have a rust free 74 K5 in phx waiting for me to bring it to co. Has anyone done this with a truck or K5...without ending up with a state assigned title? Have thought of using a 80 up dash assm so i can move the vin tag into the older body...course i should not say these things... Comments thoughts....azblazer@bresnan.net DW

i was wondering the same thing, my 76 needs the cab replaced and i have a nice one from my 85 parts truck, dillemmas being a: the 76 does not need emission tested & the 85 would, and b: the 76 is a 1 ton, the 85 was a 1/2 ton. the vin tag on my 76 is in the door jamb, the one on the 85 is in the dash. i'll probably just swap the tag from the 76 to the replacement cab and cover the dash with some carpet on top or something since i was planning to use the 85's dash pad too.

you could always remove the vin tag out of the newer cab and make sure you get rid of the rivets.. then there is no way to trace the origon of the cab..... just make sure you put the old vin tag in the right spot and use rosebud rivets and it should never be discovered...

I have the rivets...by taking the dash out of the 74 and inserting a 89-91 dash structre then all i have to do is transfer the 79 vin to the 89-91 structure and weld up the 4 holes in the door frame where the old 74 vin tag was...only a true chevy blazer nut would be able to tell the difference in the floor pans to give it away...

Doug, I would be interested in a pair of rivets too...or at least a lead on where to get them.

um yeah me too, I want some rivets. I am going to keep mine an 85, but eventually will be replacing the cab in hoped of finding one that wasn't hacked up. Also how hard is it to pull the entire dash frame out and replace it with another one of similar yr... ie 85? thanks

when i replaced the dash in my camaro i got up behind the rivets and cut the backs off with end nippers, then glued the tag and rivets into the new cowl section. a good way to do it if you can get to them. think i can access the ones in my 76 through the opening in the cab corner with side cutters.

www.trimtags.com
BUT, these rivets are ONLY for people who are removing trim tags in restorations, and cannot be used for any other purpose. (we need a whistling smiley...) |

I actually got mine on ebay a few years back...been sitting on them for a while. The 79 body is so so...gonna just torch the body mount bolts and tote the carcas to the scrap metal bin...and start from the frame up...
It has what appears to be a factory roof rack on the top and the air deflector also. The front seat are saveable...possably a door or two...dash structure and thats about it. Rear shock mount on the drivers side is toast...a comon K series issue...flyin hi in arizona makes a heavy duty replacement...but...since the army has me busy next month and i think may 3rd i'll have orders to iraq so the C5 is in limbo..but she is home..
