In one respect: the more throttle you give the less vacuum you have. Therefore if you are driving on the highway and are able to reduce the throrrle and maintain your speed you should get better gas mileage. There are other reasons but I will leave them to other members with much more knowledge.

Vacuum guages are...cool! They fill up that empty spot on your dash.

that is correct, the higher the vacuum the more effcient your engine is. the gauge would also be a easy reference if your truck was all of the sudden running bad from a vacuum leak, you would be able to know that it was vacuum leak immediately by checking the gauge, as in loss of vac pressure. my .02.....
