propane was very popular in the '60s and '70s because propane was super cheap. If you simply put a propane carb and tank in a gasoline engine you will be disappointed with the performance. To really get the power the compression ratio must be raised significantly. Propane was popular for farm tractors of that era as well. The common trick for antique tractor pullers today is to use propane heads and pistons with high test gasoline.
