I'm installing new leaf springs and shackles and would like to know the best method you have found to remove the threaded pin sleeve from the frame hanging bracket. I also have one on the front that has the threaded pin brocken off in the hanger. I've been scratching my head on this one for awhile. Any sugestions welcomed. Thanks, Erik

Re: Help with shackle removal.
Well, the way that it's supposed to work is as follows (roughly per factory repair manual):
remove zerk fitting, thread slide-hammer fitting into pin and attach hammer, back pin out with the slide hammer The zerk fitting uses pipe threads -- I think that they're 1/4" but I'm not certain. I don't know if any of the current slide-hammer manufacturers sell the correct fitting. You might have to fabricate the slide-hammer fitting.

Re: Help with shackle removal.
Thank you for your answer Norselander.
I have found this information myself. I guess my real question is has anyone had a pin sheared off in the hanger that is attached to the frame. The pin broke off on the grease zerk end and the other end is tapered so I have nothing to get a hold of it to remove it. I will try to pound it out with a punch. |

Re: Help with shackle removal.
I replaced the shackles on my 1949 chevy half ton a few years back.
found a rod smaller than the insert, hammer and a good aim worked for me. Just make sure that the frame is stable on the jack stands and swing away. |

Re: Help with shackle removal.
Gave up on pounding out the bushing after several hours of banging.
I have ground off the rivets and am discarding the hanger. Now I am looking for a good frame shackel hanger. If some one has a spare please let me know how much. ![]() Thanks |

Re: Help with shackle removal.
Eric, If you can get a drill bit into the rubber bushing, drill out the rubber working your way around and it will pop out. then clean up the shackle and press in a new bushing.

I will see if I can get one off for you. I do charge extra if I bust a knuckle. ![]() |
