Re: engine rebuild
It's really hard to tell - "rebuild" unfortunately isn't a "standard" term that states clearly exactly what work is going to be done. Do you have a breakdown of what you're getting for the $?

Re: engine rebuild
That probably is a standard price if it is a reputable person who gives a warantee. On the other hand, you can probably buy a remanufactured motor for less than the cost getting one remanufactured.
It usually costs a little more for a 305 vs. 350 around here you can get a remanufactured 350 with a 3yr/30,000 mi. warantee for about $800. (minus intake, vavle covers, oil pan, carb...) -Jeremy

Re: engine rebuild
usually, our machine shop charges on average $1200-$1500 for 305s, mostly due to the rings on the pistons, not sure why but our 350's usually run around $700-$1200. As was said before, make sure the company is giving you a warranty on their work.

Re: engine rebuild
If thats JUST for the rebuild I would go with a crate engine such as one from www.SDPC2000.com I know the base 350 runs $1375 ( http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/130/...ate-Engine.htm )and shipping usually is not too bad IMO. A friend of mine bought one from them a few years ago and they even did a few upgrades for him before they shipped it. Best way to go IMO.

Re: engine rebuild
He said almost everything would be new and yes this does include removal and replacement. Why is it that 305's cost more than 350's. They are a smaller engine so you think it would be cheaper. Can someone please explain the differance between short and long blocks.

"Most everything new" - that's not real specific ![]() New: - Pistons/rings - Camshaft/lifters - Pushrods (maybe - I put new ones in) - Timing chain - Bearings (main/rod/cam) - Valve guides, seals, springs, keepers. New valves as req'd - Water pump - Gaskets Reuse - All engine sheetmetal - Harmonic balancer (assumes acceptable condition) - Rockers/balls (likely some debate here) Machine work - Hot tank block, Magnaflux, bore/hone, cam bearings, freeze plugs, etc. - Resize rods, press piston pins - Grind crank undersize - Magnaflux heads, cut valves/seats, install seals - Assembly - Installation Other stuff that "should" be done - O/H or replace distributor - Rough balance of rotating ass'y - Surface block, heads - Align bore if req'd - Head port match (NOT porting) Anyone else want to weigh in on this? |
