ebay sighting: 454 Sport

Just spotted this on ebay...one of the rarest of the rare, I think - - a true 454-powered Chevy Sport! I don't think I have ever seen a factory 454-powered Sport or Street Coupe outside of various 1977-1979-era magazine tests. I can't substantiate the production figures given in the auction, but I do know that the Sports I have seen have had small blocks (or even sixes!).

This particular one has been repainted a different color than original with the decals removed, and various Silverado interior trim bits have replaced those of the original Scottsdale package. Other items like the grill, steering, seat, wheels (from original spokes to ralleys) etc, have been changed, but this is still the real deal as attested to by the option listing and hood ornament.

A real stunner!

Ken, good find! That is one good looking truck I must say! I wonder what his reserve is? I think it is cool they kept the hood emblem, or we might not have known it was a true sport.

Re: ebay sighting: 454 Sport

Of course, the options tag from the glove box gives it away too...

That is a nice truck!

Very nice truck! Yeah, I was going to say the options tag gave it away too, but Joe beat me to it.

Brandon,

I really agree with you...in fact, after I made this initial post, I then visited our "other old forum" and started a similarly gushing thread about this find. There, I was very politely "flamed" by some follow-up posters who suggested that without the graphics and other original characteristics, the novelty of the vehicle was nothing.

I responded by saying that after I came down from the high of seeing "Sport" and "454" simultaneously on the glovebox sticker, I realized that the restorer had, in effect, turned a rare truck into a "common" one. Phoenix Graphics might be able to supply the missing stripes, but returning the truck to its original gray tu tone may be less feasible to accomplish.

Nevertheless, I still appreciate "documentation" I guess, for what it might mean to some future owner of the vehicle!

Good seeing all of you again!

Ken, that must be why you have 99 post here and only 7 over there.

It is good to hear from you again too, stop by more often.

Same here. I would love to have the $$$ to buy a truck like that and get it back to factory specs just to have a piece of history. Someone who ordered it back in the day knew what they were doing.

Re: ebay sighting: 454 Sport

There was a 79 454 sport truck for sale here for a long long time. Guy wanted 5 large for it, and the list of good things are as follows:it had a frame, a motor, and a transmission. Total bondo wagon.

Re: ebay sighting: 454 Sport

Did GMC ever make a similiar version to the Sport? Back in 1987, I was looking for a short-bed fleetside and test drove a 1979 GMC Sierra Classic short-bed stepside with a 454 and nearly identical options as the one posted in this thread. I didn't buy it because it was a stepper. What an idiot...........Back then I would have hot-rodded it anyway and ruined whatever collector value it had, so maybe it was a good thing I didn't get it.

Re: ebay sighting: 454 Sport

GMC made a Street Coupe, it was similar to the Chevy Sport.
