The front axle is a Dana 44 closed knuckle axle. Almost the same thing as 70-72, except they are Dana 44 open knuckle.

The theory was that the closed knuckle would keep crud away from the u-joint in the knuckle, but they ended up just being a collection place for mud, etc...

I have two closed knuckle axles (one on the '68 and one on the '69). Haven't had problems with either.
