350 Crate Motor
My buddy bought a beater truck a while back and ran it for a while. Then pulled the motor, and is planning on dropping it into his newer truck.
I know its a 350, and it has headers. He says that its a crate motor thats bored, with a cam and whatnot, with 10K miles on it. He is going from what the previous owner is telling him, which seems like total BS. The motor looks about 25 years old, and he says it was just because of an oil leak. But the block is a dark metal color with discolorations, definitly does not look like a crate motor, nor a motor with 10K on it. The valve covers look old as hell, and have an old looking decal that says 350 on it. Is there a casting anywhere that will tell when the motor was made, and maybe if its really a crate motor, or just a stocker? |

Re: 350 Crate Motor
Look on the backside of the engine, behind the driver's side head there should be a number that you can check at www.mortec.com

Re: 350 Crate Motor
A crate engine is just an engine that comes in a crate It could be a "stocker" crate engine. The only way you can really be sure what you're getting is to a) get specific specs (not just "a cam" - WHICH cam?) and verify externally....or tear it down.
More folks get screwed buying a "built" engine second hand than I'd care to count... |

Re: 350 Crate Motor
You best bet is to assume if he doesn't have a reciept from the purchase of a Crate motor that ties to the one in the truck assume it isn't one. Same goes with any "extra" parts. If there is no reciept, assume the seller is trying to trick you....

Re: 350 Crate Motor
Your first impression is that it's nothing special and old. Go with that because your probably right.

Re: 350 Crate Motor
Yea, thats pretty much what Im thinking.
He didn't get ripped off though because he bought the whole truck for 600 bucks, beat the piss out of it, then pulled the motor and is dropping it in his newer truck...hes already got his 600 dollars worth |
