If the spring is stock height, it might still be under a lot of pressure & want to 'pop' out. This can be potentially dangerous.
A simple trick to keep this from happening is to wrap something (rope, strap, wire, chain) around 1 of the coils before releasing the tension on the spring. If it wants to pop out, you have a tether on it keeping it under control.
