rear axle seeping
I have pulled the axle off of a 72 1/2 ton that and sandblasted it. I was getting ready to paint the axle and noticed some oil on it. I cleaned it off and went back to it today and noticed that the oil is back. It seems that there are "plugs" in the axle on both sides of the pumpkin(not on the axle tubes) that are seeping oil when the axle is turned upside down. Is this to be expected? Is it a "feature" or a problem? If it is a problem, how should I fix it? Let me know if pictures are needed. Thanks...

On my 67 there is a vent on the topside with a short piece of hose on it. Not sure if that is stock or not. Then of course there is the fill plug on the side.

Leaking there isn't normal. I believe that's the place where the tubes are welded to the housing (to ensure they won't pull out under extreme circumstances).
That said, I believe it's an easy fix. Clean them up real good with a grinding stone or similar and then lay a good clean bead of weld on them. I think that should solve it. Good luck.

It was probably caused from blasting it. You can also clean it and put a good epoxy,JB weld,ect. there. I did the same thing years ago.

Be careful welding that, since the iron is oil impregnated now it will flash up on you. Try heating the area with a flame a couple of times to burn off the oil. Don't get it red hot, just warm it a little and try to burn the oil out before Arc/Mig welding. JB weld is an easier solution.

will you be installing that rearend upside down? lol. if not, dont worry about it, it won't leak when installed and fluid is filled to the proper level
