Question: Fuel tank removal in 70 GMC
I am a new member and it is nice to be a part of this.
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to properly remove the fuel tank on my '70. I am thinking that it has some debris that needs to be removed. I have removed all of the bolts attaching it to the cab, but do not know how to remove it from the neck leading to the cap. It is one of those things that I can see myself screwing up if I don't ask. Welcome to the board from West Michigan!
I use a soap solution to lube the neck seal and then carefully push the seal down into the space between the neck and hole. If the seal is no good any way then you don't have to be careful of it. When lubing the seal, I pull it away from the cab as it can be stuck. Once the seal is free of the hole, the tank can be easily removed since you have bolts and lines removed. When installing the tank, I put the seal in place, lube the neck and seal and then push the neck through the seal. (The neck will go through the seal when installing but when removing the tank the neck will catch because of the way it is made). Good luck! Jim

Howdy, another new member here...
I just had to do the same on my 68GMC. The rubber seal was old and hard and I didn't want to reuse it so I cut it off with a sharp knife. It was easy to remove the tank after that. I ordered another seal from the vendors. They're inexpensive and arrived in a few days-plus it was a lot more pliable than my old one... |
