... and the 406 that I was building for it is half way complete. Due to budget constraints, I now have no choice but to drop in my other 406 that I used to run back in the early 90s ... a bitter sweet reunion, but sometimes ya gotta say WTF.

This engine, built by Brustle Competition Engines in Philly (1989) used to propel a station wagon down the quarter at 12s ... until the frame cracked. Out came the engine and to the scrap yard the station wagon went. I've been dragging this ol' beast around with me since 1994 "just in case" I decided to build another bracket car. So much for the bracket car idea.

I'm not looking forward to buying premium gas but at least my truck won't labor to climb these NW PA mountains anymore.

Has anyone tried mixing their own high octane gasoline? I just filled the tank with 87 octane and this 406 will NOT like it. I was going to try about 20% xylene.

well there always moonshine.

but as for mixing my own i kinda left that to the gas station i dont want to blow up

Never mixed it with 87 octane, but here's the chart the guys around here use for premium fuel:

Formula #2 - Xylene
R+M/2 (octane).........117
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...........94.5 Octane
20%...........97.0 Octane
30%...........99.5 Octane

Looks like ~20% xylene should get ya in the ballpark.

Thats suxs about the motor blowing but sounds like u got a good 1 to go in there now.

Kool, thanks for the formula. I'll cut back on timing if I have to until I fill 'er up again with premium.

Yeahhhhhhhh, It's a drag, but I can't complain. That 305 has 271,000 miles on it and for a 305 that amazes me. The truck never left me stuck either. It's still running, it just sucks going uphill.

The ol' race 406 should get me by for a while until I finish the one in progress.

WE use to mix our own in Western Pa (70s), but then we had to worry about the revenuers

Been told im nuts to bring it back from the dead (still going to happen) plans-all stock with a turbo 292 inline 3 speed column shift. and thats it big block 427 and 5 speed trans and ford 9 inch theyhave no home yet thinking what to put them in and a 79 c60 trash truck um no idea i have one
