Another Stupid WIW Question

I posted the truck on Craigslist in upstate NY. I only mention the location because prices are so geographically dependent. I had what I thought was a very realistic price in mind, and posted at that price or B/O.

The first yahoo that showed up was in a clapped out Blazer that looked like it had been around the world twice. He was very proud of the chrome valve covers, however. Typical NY thirty year old truck.

He went on to say that he had only paid 800 for the Blazer, and therefore my truck could not possibly be worth more than 1000, because his truck only needed about 200 worth of body work to look as good as mine.

I told him that his truck would still be rusty as hell, even if you hide the rust. (I was a bit more polite than that...) He just did not seem to get it.

By the time he left, he was willing to go to 1100, cuz it is a big block.

What do you say to people like this?!?!?!?!

Note that I show EVERYONE the 'before' picture so they know exactly what they are getting. I don't need people assuming that the truck is a painted over pile of rust like this guy's blazer will become.

But it gets better....

Since I advertised that I preferred a trade for an older GM car, a guy comes along with an 81 Malibu wagon. Body pretty nice for a NY car. 305 smogger stuff. He wants 400 and my truck for his car, because his car has 20000 fewer miles and is 9 years newer. I told him I would take $4000 cash for my truck or $3800 and his car. (That is how LITTLE I want his car) He politely said I was being unreasonable.

Criminy! I would rather donate it than deal with people like this! Are people really stupid, or does everyone just want something for nothing? Better question... am I the one being stupid?!?!?!

The way to handle people like this is to be honest about it. If you have to hurt there feelings then tuff. Most people want something for nothing. It's your truck just tell them out right NO!

$4000.00 for your truck is a good price I think by the pictures. Hold to your guns someone will scoop it up for that price.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Very nice truck. The value of the truck rests with you. I have always told people to price something based on what they would be willing to pay for it or the cost to fix it to the condition they like. Unless you just really need the money I agree to stick to the $4000 you started with. As for dealing with people, well sometimes you just have to say no and then end the conversation. Good luck.

Re: Another Stupid WIW Question

If that is a current picture, it spent the winters off of the streets of Rochester. From what I remember from my visits to KODAK, the springtime of the year had KODAK paying bonuses and there bein' cheap cars parked on the sides of the streets, for sale at prices that seemed ridiculous in Arkansas. I guess the lack of body panels led to discounted pricing....pay for what you get, huh?

I had a '67 Impala Convertible one time that I parked on the street. It needed a new top, although it didn't leak. The front fenders both needed replaced, due to the P.O.'s inability to navigate a construction zone sign while the car was drinking (drove it between the uprights of the sign). A guy came by and saw it (it wasn't for sale) and wanted to know if I'd take his clapped-out Ford Country Squire wagon for it. "Geeze, I don't know.....NO!!! Now take your crap and go away!!"

Re: Another Stupid WIW Question

People like that blazer guy and the country squire guy, I don't think you CAN hurt their feelings.
The ones that get me are those that print off KBB and NADA values for vehicles similar to theirs to show and just know that theirs is worth at least the same or more justs because it has the original air in the spare tire or something rediculous like that.
In his mind, your truck couldn't be worth more than $1,000 because he only paid 800 for his junk blazer? He wasn't going to buy your truck anyway. He was just being nosey.

Re: Another Stupid WIW Question

I just sold a 96 Blazer and I think I met some of the people you did. One guy said I was crazy to ask so much ($3200) Another guy wanted to trade a p.o.s. motorhome for it. I had to get rude with him because he just wouldn't leave.
Stick with the price you want to get. It's your truck, if they want it make 'em pay.

Re: Another Stupid WIW Question

Lived north of Syracuse most of my life - then went FARTHER north! Believe it or not, it got WORSE! I knew guys who would call for a $5 haricut and ask if they washed it at home, if they could get it for 3.... Stick with what you want - usually those that rub you the wrong way up there are used to hiding stuff and sticking it to others so they figure you are too. Then again, we all look for deals... just, we aren't all jerks or rude about it (and some just don't know any better.. and never will).

Re: Another Stupid WIW Question

Hey tclaremont ...
Food for thought. Print off a copy of the article about our trucks being an ICON and show people these are more than just an old truck.
(see past ICON thread) It'a a classic truck with values that will be going up. You have BB, AC, and 400 Turbo truck...desirable options. Stick to your guns and the right buyer will be the new owner of your truck. As far as the other "lookers"...they don't deserve to own an ICON.
