Check out my new 85 GMC 4x4

Just got this truck a few days ago. Ive always wanted a truck like this ever since I saw the movie Red Dawn back in the 80's.
So what do you guys think? I really dont know a whole lot about old trucks so I am hoping to learn as much as possible and any comments would be appreciated. Its a Sierra Classic I believe. It has a 4inch lift and the 350 engine was recently bored and stroked to 383 cu in. It runs very well and is damn fast for a truck! Now I want to start restoring it, painting it etc. Is this a good website for 4x4 trucks? It seems like most here have dropped 2wd trucks. Anyways, been very interesting looking at all the GMC and Chevy trucks here!

Ah.. southern rust free sheet metal... Just because I have a lowered 2wd doesnt mean I dont like or have a lifted 4x4. Yours is nice, wish I had one in that shape. I should come down there for my projects, it would save my Mig and a ton of wire.. My 4x4s are a 79 Blazer and a couple F150s. You should see the rust on them! Salt does that. I just showed up here too, and I have wanted a shortbox 4x4 for some time.

This one is pretty much rust free except for some surface rust where the paint job is peeling. I cant decide if I should spend the time trying to clean, polish and wax the current paint or just take it into Maaco or something for a cheap paint job. My wife isnt too thrilled and is looking at it as a money pit at this point so I have to be careful with how I spend money on it in the next few months

Well if you just want shiny paint that is easy.. A gallon of tractor enamel will set you back around $100-$140, some epoxy primer for under it runs about the same. Sand it down, and shoot it. Helps if you have a nice shop to work in, and dont live in California (or similar states) where they will shoot you on sight for opening a can of paint just to check the color. Maaco will still run over $500.. I sprayed mine with tractor enamel, got some orange peel because it was a new gun, but mine is just a beater.

Then there is the other way to paint it. With a roller. Dont laugh it works with the right stuff. HOTROD had an article about it a couple months back. I saw it on a mopar forum last year and shared it with the rest of the people I know online. Its a bunch of hand labor, but you dont need special equipment, but you do need some time and a shady place that isnt under a sap filled tree.

http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html

Theres the link to one guy who did it, with a link to the original mopar thread on his page. It may be here already, I just havent been here long enough to know.

I think it looks good like it is, but it isnt my truck

Re: Check out my new 85 GMC 4x4

It could mean short-wheel-base, but generally I think it means short-wide-bed.

BTW, will be in your neck of the woods (AZ) by Thursday. Heading to Phoenix for the NASCAR race. Leaving Tuesady morning and plan on ~8 hours driving a day.

Re: Check out my new 85 GMC 4x4

Nice looking truck. I also have a shortbed 86 K10 Scottsdale 4x4. There are a lot of 2wds on here and just about all of the guys that have them lower them, but there are just as many 4x4s on here as well.

There is a forum specifically for the 4x4 crowd with a link to 4x4 pics. You should check it out. Here is the link.http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=113533

There is also a link for shortbed trucks in general. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=204533 Quite a few shortbed 4x4s as well as 2wds. Lots of great looking trucks on here. This site rocks!

I don't think that you could have come to a better site than this one for lots of good info, and welcome!

Here is a link to some of the last pictures that I took of my own truck. ...Joe http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=263580

Re: Check out my new 85 GMC 4x4

BTW rent/borrow a high speed buffer.... compound it then polish/wax it... you would be VERY surprised how good that dead paint would look.. I brought back some very bad paint to presentable..
