Re: Found a steal on a 72 SWB..but no title!
So, if my truck was ripped off by some A-hole and he decided to put it on Craig's list and sell it claiming it was his brothers who moved away etc. All you guys would buy my stolen truck!!!!! NICE!!!!
I wouldn't touch that truck unless the seller could prove some form of legal ownership and or legal documentation allowing him to sell it. THINK ABOUT IT---to many of our trucks are stolen and re-sold or parted out by the A-holes out there. |

Re: Found a steal on a 72 SWB..but no title!
Get the bill of sale with the VIN number on it.
In Georgia you don't have to have a title if the vehicle is over 20 years old, just a bill of sale. You also can have them sign over the last tag recipt here as well. Not sure how that translates to your situation but maybe this info helps! Jason But.... I agree with HUCK 100% Last edited by Number98; 02-21-2008 at 02:20 AM. |

Re: Found a steal on a 72 SWB..but no title!
i agree with huck no title no buy. i went and looked at the truck also, and she told me the person the brother bought the truck from mailed him the title and the post office made a mistake and put it in the wrong p.o. box and he never got it. im not buying that story.

Re: Found a steal on a 72 SWB..but no title!
Hey guys. Just passing on a lil info here. This title issue used to be a big deal to me as well but I strongly urge that you do some homework with your stae DMV. In Arkansas (and several other states) any vehicle that fits "antique" status that does NOT have any current registration (I.E. cannot be found in the state database) only requires a bill of sale to be registered. The state will print you a new title in your name AFTER you register the vehicle. If you're worried about getting stuck with stolen property have the VIN run thru the state police. If it hasnt been reported then whats the problem?
Like I said though, this is the law HERE. But my local DMV had never heard of it. A friend of mine in the used car business clued me in and it took getting the ladies at my dmv to make a couple phone calls to verify it, but it is a LAW. |

Re: Found a steal on a 72 SWB..but no title!
The state police, county clerk or dmv can do a VIN lookup but only in that state!! There is nothing to prevent the previous owner from claiming it as long as they can prove it was reported stolen. Let your conscience be your guide. Huck

Mabe the dmv but the police have a nation wide database. Their job is to catch thieves. Trust me if the pickup was stolen then it would show up.

Re: Found a steal on a 72 SWB..but no title!
Just to clarify I was joking about buying the truck without a title. The only way I would have bought it was with a power of attorney and calling the DMV to make sure he was the rightful owner. Anyway, the guy doesn't want to budge off $800 so he can keep it. I'll start with something in a little better shape.
Meathead, what did you think of the truck? |

Alabama doesn't require a title for 1974 or older.

Re: Found a steal on a 72 SWB..but no title!
I sold a car a few months ago. Somehow I had missplaced the title several years ago. I just applied for a duplicate title + $9.00 and got the title a week later. No problem.

I have been through this title thing so many times. In Arkansas they push you to filing for a "bonded" title when you dont have one (unless your vehicle falls into the catagory I described in my earlier post). You must provide the dmv with copies of an NCIC report when you file. Basically you have to prove to them that the vehicle is not stolen, then you must purchase a "bond" from your insurance company in order for the dmv to issue you a title for the vehicle. The amount of the bond is a percentage of the value of the vehicle as set by the state dmv (in other words they appraise it based on a description of the vehicle you provide to them). The problem with this is that they never actually SEE the vehicle!! They do not want photos, only descriptions, purchase price, and sellers information. It usually costs a hundred to two hundred bucks to get a title this way. This is a way for the state to generate revenue AND cover their asses at the same time. |
