passenger car 4 speed in a 456
What is involved in putting a passenger car 4 speed (muncie, or borg warner) in a 65 chevy truck.
The truck currently has the original 4 speed. My main questions? drive shaft? crossmember? and shifter? ( I would like to keep the bench seat.) Have any of you done this? |

I too am planning to keep the bench seat...It is possible to do. A new shifter mount, with some linkages will need fabbed up to position the shifter in the correct spot. Definately do-able, for sure.

rob- was your truck a long fleet? and did they leave the crossmember that supports the carrier bearing?
I have a bench seat 4 speed shifter for a 55 chev, I just don't know if it will reach. |

Re: passenger car 4 speed in a 456
I have the M-21 Muncie in my '63.
I used the Hurst shifter with the stick made for our trucks (the handle curls out and around the shape of the bench). Also, the trans itself can be used with the stock one piece driveshaft, but I needed a different yolk than the original - fine spline on the Muncie and coarse on the 3 spd. Greg

Re: passenger car 4 speed in a 456
When I was running a four speed, I used a Hurst competition plus shifter with a curved Hurst handle flipped backwards. My buddy is doing the same thing in his '63. Works good but the shifter is against the seat in second and fourth. Not enough for either of us to complain. The driveline needs to be shortened and fitted with a TH350 yoke for Muncie and T-10, or a TH400 yoke for a super T-10. A simple tube or angle crossmember bolted to the framerails works great and is easy to build.

Yep, long fleetside. There was no carrier bearing, the driveshaft passed through the crossmember.

Re: passenger car 4 speed in a 456
drove a 66 Chevy PU for years with a Muncie 4 spd
I used the origional clutch housing and a hurst shifter for a pickup one froma 57 chevy car will also do it with a little bend and just any good drive shaft shop can make youa new shaft or take one from a stand shift car along and getit shortened or lenghtened it will all clear bench seat fine Gene Sharp Last edited by Gene Sharp; 05-19-2008 at 10:36 PM. |
