85 chevy 4wd to 2wd coversion?
So, here is my dilemma...
Decided that im going to sell my 2004 chevy, because id like the extra cash money in my pocket. But, i wouldnt mind to keep my wheels (flat black 22's). Now, i really want a squarebody 2wd shortbed. My roommate has an 85 chevy 4wd, in really good shape, for dirt cheap. Now i converted my 65 chevy panel to an 80 GMC disk brake front crossmember, and that was simple bolt in. Now does the 4wd frame have bolt holes for the 2wd crossmember? Also, is there anyway i can keep the 6 lug rear axle, and get a 6 lug front so i can still run my wheels? Im afraid that it might just be easier to graft a 2wd front section of frame on, with crossmember and everything, which would give me a chance to z it while im there. Anyway, if anyone has done the swap, or has any info on swapping to 2wd, and keeping 6 lug let me know. And im very competent, so dont hesitate suggestions! |

Re: 85 chevy 4wd to 2wd coversion?
I have an early 80's 4wd Blazer frame that was converted to 2wd, so I know it can be done. I don't think there are too many holes that will line up, just make sure you take good measurements or make a template from the truck you take the crossmember off of. Make sure you include the holes for mounting the Idler arm also.
As far as keeping 6 lug wheels, you should be able to use any of the 6 lug rotors for converting to disc brakes that any board vendor should have. Besides the differences in ball joints and tie-rod ends, the rest of the spindles were all the same as far as fitment goes. Good luck!
