hood alignment

OK... so ever since I removed my hood for paint and what not, I have not been able to put it back on correctly. Right now it wont go down flush in front of the cowl vent (windshield side). I can push it down with my hand but then it kinda pops back up. And also, the latch has too much play. it locks but can still move up and down a bit. It is not held down firmly.

Im guessing if I fix one problem the other will fix itself also. Did I put it too high or low on the hinges??? it is kind close to the cowl when I close it. Any closer and it may scratch/chip paint.

Look close and see if there are any marks from those lock washers where bolts were lined up before, thats how I lined mine up.

did you remove the hinges too?

Are they lubed up good? They can hang up and need a little push when they are crusty. Coated in dust from bodywork?

Check for marks like Magoo said.

I cant check for marks any more... I painted the inside of the hood and marks are not visible. Hmm, I will try to check the hinges and lube them up.

I didnt remove hinges but they were exposed to the elements for a long time because the hood was off. Like I said Im guessing if I fix that problem it will fix the hood not closing properly.

It also helps to have a second person aligning it simultaneously. I've taken my hood off and put it back on by myself and it ain't much fun I'm not gonna lie.

Ditto that! Thats probably why I cant get it right. Where are the friends when you need em huh! LOL

Lee and I recently installed and adjusted the hood on his '66 Chevy K10 build (66JEWLS), with not to much trouble.

First Step:

If the hood is too close to the cowl, you must adjust the four bolts holding the hinge to the hood, in or out, for correct gap reveal at the cowl.

Second Step:

If the hood springs up at the cowl on one side or the other, you must adjust the four bolts securing the hinge to the inner fender.

Last Step:

If the hood does not properly latch, you must adjust the cone-shaped end on the grille support. If it will not click the cone is too low...if it clicks but has some play, it is too high.

With some patience and a good set of hands, you can have it aligned in short order.

Been there done that!! It sucks!!
