Is this right?
I was looking at the rear springs on the stepper...and I noticed that 3 of the coils looks like they are collapsed. Is this they way its supposed to be?

No.They were probably heated to lower or settled that way.The center wraps are closer than the outer when new.

Thats what I thought. I noticed on my fleet with overloads that the springs sat up higher. So I might take the springs off the trailer and use them.

they are supposed to be like that.
Variable rate springs. You get the ride quality (soft ride) from the center 3 rings, once you put a load on there, they stack up, and then the rest of the spring takes over, with a higher spring rate. |

They also won't completely compress during static loading, i.e. with the truck just sitting there. I would bet those were heated to lower the truck.

I wish the SPID was still on mine. I looked at the other springs I have and they are the same. One thing I can....Andy has never been wrong!

When I put new drop coils in my truck the old ones looked just like those. Before I pulled them my truck was at stock ride height. I asked an old chevy dealer mechanic and he said the same thing Andy did. It looks wierd but that is the way they came, not because they were heated.

I've been wrong PLENTY of times.
HD optioon springs were not progressive as far as I know, but I have never owned HD coils. I do know the rear springs on my old GMC were stock replacement for a base model 1/2 ton, bought in the 80's (from the dealer) and installed in the early 90's, and were exactly like that, as were just about every coil spring I have ever looked at on these trucks. The 3 center rings are not supposed to be touching, but only 1/8 inch or so apart. Once they are all 3 stacked up and solid, then you are riding on the rest of the spring. Those are stock style... if not original 40 year old springs. They may have sagged a little and be almost stacked up at the rest position. But, that IS pertty much what they are supposed to look like. If they were heated, you would see evedence to the fact too. Either burn marks if recent, or very bad rust in the burn spots if not so recent. |

Another thing I just noticed today while under the burb... my 72 C/20 suburban has the coils like that, and it sites higher oin back than my C/30 longhorn.
