traction question

i have a 1969 stepside with a 9 inch rear end thats shorter 2 1/2 inches on each side. i hade to trim the finders in the rear so they would not rub because its my daily driver. my goal is to go as wide as i can in the rear so i wont have traction problems with my motor combo.by the looks of it it looks like i can fit maybe a 14 1/2 wide tire without rubbing the frame .
my question is my shocks and springs in the rear are preety worn out and need replacing what is the best way to go about it i need it to hook up good.
i need to do that first before i buy the wider rear rims and tires.
