12 bolt rear end?

I am still collecting a little research on my truck be fore I get really into. One question I have is about the existing rearend. I have a 12 bolt, but this is not posi. I looked on line and should be able to get a posi spool for about $300. Can I use my existing gears and should this be able to handle about 420 hp? I plan to use the existing axels and leave the drums on, just change out the spool. and if I go this route, how hard would it be?

Re: 12 bolt rear end?

Well a posi (or limited slip) and spool are two different things. A posi uses clutches let the rear wheels differ in speed going around a corner, applies power to both while going in a straight line. Good for the street.

A spool locks both wheels together permanently, which is good for drag racing but bad for the street.

Yes, you can use the same axles, and it should handle your power level just fine.

Are you doing the Posi install yourself? If so I'd take the gears to a machine shop when you have it all ripped apart and have them NDI'd. That will let you know if you have any internal stresses or cracks in them, and give you a better idea about possible failure.

I am thinking of doing them myself, but maybe it would be best to just take everything to a shop. not sure what my total plan is yet.

Re: 12 bolt rear end?

Well depending on the route you go to rid your ride of the one wheel peel you may or may not want to go to a shop. If you go with a power trax no problem installing it a monkey can do It, I can lol. Just stay away from the lock right locker there junk but then Ive fragged both so its hard to say. I"m looking into an eaton unit but I dont reccomend installing one yourself unless you happen to have the same kinda tools floating arund your garage as I do.
