with my glass filter it wasn't that it broke, it was that the cheap end caps came loose and it wouldnt tighten up because the threads got messed up. it leaked for 2 miles all over the top of my engine, didn't start a fire but the overwhelming smell of gasoline, a melted fuse holder, and a couple discolored painted parts is all that happened. i got a metal fram one for a dollar more.

to answer your question, i'd say the rubber fuel lines may be coming apart on the inside and flowing upstream to the filter clogging it, or trash in the tank.
