Dana 60 hub seal removal

Before I try the liberal use of my favorite persuader is there a kinder gentler way to remove the inner hub seal on a D60 without some special tool? I'd like to inspect/repack the wheel bearings and if possible reuse the seal. If reusing the seal is a bad idea any good pursuation suggestions so I don't nick up the bearings?

I just had my front rotors turned so this one is fresh in my head. Theres no risk to the bearing when pulling the hub seal. Theres actually about an inch between them. Its a cheap part just trash it and replace it.

Yeah, replace the seal.

Re: Dana 60 hub seal removal

I use the bearing itself to pop out the seal.

I have a long brass punch that I use on the races.

I also have race and bearing installers, if you want to borrow them?

DONE. Picked up a pair of seals at the shop and got the first hub stripped and cleaned. It was one seriously well greased hub, packed front to back no gaps.

How do I tell if the wheel bearings are toast? They feel smooth and don't appear to have any scoring.

I look for scoring, spin them against my palm for any sort of "wrong".

I generally replace them, as it's cheap insurance against a bad ride.
