1971 GMC 1/2 ton Longbox, Barn find

First off I am looking to buy this truck not sell it and I would like your advice on what it might be worth.

1971 GMC 1/2 ton, longbox, 350 4 speed manual. Truck has been sitting in a barn for 6 or 7 years. It has power steering and power brakes.

The truck runs at an idle but dies when revved up.

Yes I have pictures.....

Re: 1971 GMC 1/2 ton Longbox, Barn find

Please be honest and point out potential problems.

I am looking for a good old truck I can drive.

As the pictures above show there is some rust in the left side rocker and cab corner.

I have not seen the truck in person.

OK, so the original ad I saw said 72, but the pictures are all tagged 71, I have emailed the person selling the truck to clarify.

Re: 1971 GMC 1/2 ton Longbox, Barn find

If I was looking at it I would want to see pics of the cab mounts, radiator support and under the carpet by the rockers, But that would just get me to go look at it, It looks like on that passanger cab corner/rocker has had some serious putty and that would scare me, but what are you going to use it for? just using it for a work truck I would say it would probly be great but not to be able to drive it home makes it kinda iffy. I would say 1200? but that's the most I would offer not being able to check it out in person.

I would say this is caused by a bad accelerator pump in the carb. It could also be a partially plugged fuel filter....

Blaine I see the truck has Washington Plates and if you are gonna bring it into Canada I'm sure you know it will need a mechanical & safety inspection and with the rust on the cab corner do you think it will pass inspection? As a daily driver I would not want to have more than 2500/3000CDN in that truck and that would include purchase price and associated expeneses getting the truck legal to drive on the street.

Yeah,or 7-8 year old gas in the lines?

I like that truck and agree that $2500 or higher sounds right unless there is substantial rust probs.

The seller also thinks it is the accelerator pump.

Greg, good point about the inspection. I have heard that the Canadian inspection at Canadian Tire is pretty loose, and in the NWT we do not have inspections, other that those for insurance. My 69 GMC passed the insurance inspection.

Re: 1971 GMC 1/2 ton Longbox, Barn find

Thanks for everyone's help.

I think the RH cab corner scares me the most. What is under there?

I think I will pass.....

Here is the original ad that got me interested.

1972 GMC C1500 extra clean and complete

My uncle has a 1972 GMC C1500. 350 small block, sm420, 3:73 rearend. Complete truck. Very clean sheet metal, no rust, infact inside the bed has no dents, looks like it never hauled anything. It does have a repaint and the engine looks to have been rebuilt. This truck was in a barn sitting for 8+ years. I have started it but idles rough and will not excel, it needs a carb rebuild or replacement. Since this truck has not been used in several years I would recommend going through the brakes, cooling and fuel system. I have not ever seen one this clean. Only missing 2 pieces of trim. I would buy it but I am rebuiling a C20 already. Email me *******@yahoo.com for pics or call me *** *** ****, truck is in Walla Walla Washington. Asking $2,000.

I think it is reasonably priced and would be a fun project but not quite what I am looking for right now.

If any wants the contact info please pm me.

Hi Blaine: I know you said you are passing on this one but for future reference I want to let you know that you would not have to worry about the Canadian Tire "RIV" Inspection because that does not apply to any vehicle 15 years or older. The only inspections you would have to worry about are Provincial Inspections and from what you said if you register it in the NWT the Inspection doesn't apply although I'm sure if you wanted to register it in Alberta you would need one and then the rust would have to be fixed before they'd register it there.

Uh, what's with the Canadian inspection & rust? I could see it from a safety standpoint in mounts/ etc, but on a panel? Are they concerned about holes for exhaust to find its way in the cab?

This country has millions of rusty vehicles on the road... and I can't remember ever reading headlines that said "accident/ injury/ death found to be caused by rust"

Re: 1971 GMC 1/2 ton Longbox, Barn find

Alberta swung quite heavily from a Province with no inspections to a very tough out of province inspection program. Cars were getting dumped into Alberta onto used car lots and by curbers from other provinces with annual inspections.

Presently once a vehicle is inspected in Alberta and passes it is good to go, and does not require annual or any further inspections. So there are lots of rusty cars on the roads in Alberta, I do agree with Greg that it is probably hard to bring one into Alberta and register it.

Re: 1971 GMC 1/2 ton Longbox, Barn find

Here is what I found online about the Alberta inspections.

Out Of Province Vehicle Inspections
All vehicles registered in another province must complete the one-time Out of Province (OOP) Vehicle Inspection within three months of being brought into Alberta and before they can be registered in the province.
What the Inspection Involves
This inspection is a basic safety or mechanical fitness assessment that must be performed by a certified journeyman technician who is licensed by Alberta Transportation’s Vehicle Inspection Program (MVIP). Typically the inspection takes two hours to perform.

The mechanical fitness portion of the OOP Vehicle Inspection involves virtually all vehicle components including fuel and exhaust systems, all electrical, engine controls, powertrain, driveline, steering, suspension, braking systems, wiring and lights, tires, glass, wipers and defrosters.

The vehicle must be maintained within Original Equipment Manufacturers standards or wear tolerances in order to pass the inspection.

Structural integrity inspections establish whether or not the vehicle's frame and/or body exhibit signs of major collision damage and/or repairs. They also examine the vehicle for corrosion in body or frame members. The OOP Vehicle Inspection may not be conclusive in determining previous crash history as the inspection technicians are certified automotive service technicians, not autobody collision repair technicians. If you suspect the vehicle has sustained major damage before you purchased it, you may wish to have the vehicle examined by a collision repair technician.

Restored antique, classic, homebuilt, modified or street rod vehicles that were not previously registered, or those where proof of prior Alberta registration cannot be provided, must also undergo an OOP Vehicle Inspection the first time they are registered.

Alberta's OOP Vehicle Inspection is privatized and inspection fees are established by the inspection facility. Customers are responsibility for ensuring they receive the service expected when selecting an inspection facility.

You should discuss your vehicle's overall condition with the inspection technician before entering into an agreement to have the vehicle inspected. If the vehicle is found to be deficient during the inspection, you may choose to take your vehicle to more than one inspection technician before agreeing to complete suggested repairs.

Inspection Deadlines
Vehicles that fail the initial inspection must be repaired within 10 days of the failure notice to avoid an additional full inspection fee assessment. Vehicles repaired and presented for re-inspection within 10 days will be subject to verification of required repairs only. Inspection Certificates are valid for 14 days and vehicles must be registered in Alberta before the expiry date. Should the vehicle owner fail to register the vehicle within 14 days a full OOP Vehicle Inspection will be required again.

To locate an Alberta vehicle inspection facility.

For more information, please contact:
Vehicle Inspection Program

Perhaps a member from Eastern WA can check it out in person. If I were you, I'd post in the regional section, for someone willing to do so.

A grand is getting a fairly nice (rusty but nice-all-one color) driver in western WA. It's a buyer's market. Make Offer.

Thanks, sounds like you follow the market a bit.

What would it cost me to come down and pick up a fairly decent longbox? By decent I mean little or no rust, and driving.

My guess was to be 2000.00. The rust is typical. No need to wonder whats under the cab corners. They are shot. I'd pay a little more attention to the kick panels and floors.
