Who wants to see 1973 dealer/promo DVD's?

I have acquired a complete set of 1973 dealer promo/salesman film, used to train the salesmen of the time about the new lineup of Chevrolet trucks. It may have been used in the showrooms, but I cannot say for sure..perhaps Joe (elgracho) or Ken (kiilew) can chime in and confirm or clarify.

Anyhow, The dealerships had a special "mini theatre" they used to play these. I do not have this, and they seem to be real hard to find...and in working condition.

I found a local company who claim they can convert these to DVD, but it is a little on the xpensive side. Over the phone estimate is about $150 (plus add'l charges to break open each tape and put them on their own reel for them to convert) for a 1 hour DVD. I will get a more accurate quote once the tapes are in their possesion and when we know how long they really are.

This leads me to my question.

Would anyone be willing to go in on this with me, to help alleviate the cost AND to offer something to the rest of the enthusiast out there (like yourself)? Not looking to MAKE money on this, just looking to spend not quite so much. The more who want in the less money will be required. You financial support will get you a DVD obviously.

Reply here if you are interested, details will follow once we have a decent sized group and I know more about the cost. (EDIT: see page #2)

Looks very interesting Jeff! If you can get enough people to go in on it so that the cost for each of us would be around $10 or so I'd be willing to chip in on that piece of Chevrolet history! Find out and let us know. Surely there are enough people on this board that would want a copy of it that it could be done at a low cost for us all. ...Joe

Let me know what the cost would be . If it ends up at $10 per person , let us know what the total would be with the shipping added to get teh DVD mailed to us . I am in if it comes in between $10-$20 per person . Just let me know .

Re: Who wantes to see 1973 dealer/promo DVD's?

I'm in.

I also have the 79 set we can get converted too.

If it turns out to be cost prohibitive to do all the tapes, maybe we can pick the ones we really want. I'd love to see them all, but the pickups would be first on my list. It looks like all of them added up might not be too much time so maybe it won't matter.

Re: Who wantes to see 1973 dealer/promo DVD's?

That would be cool Joe!

I agree, I am most interested in the pickups and 4wd tapes...I could live without the vans, Luv, and Elcamino...but we'll see what it cost.

I am going to see if they can convert the van tape first...and just in case they can't and end up ruining the tape...I won't be heart broken and will still have the ones I want to keep intact.

I don't see any of us having to spend more than $10 on these if we get enough people together.

Digging thru my stuff, I still have the third and final laser disc converted to DVD to mail out for those who were in on that, I believe it was the 85 model disc. I'll send those out soon, or with these if it all works out.

Re: Who wantes to see 1973 dealer/promo DVD's?

I'm not sure its a great idea to ruin the existing format to get to DVD... Ok, I'm a lover of old crap.

You didn't mention the current format. What is it? They look like VCR tapes, but I'm not sure even Betamax (or whatever lost to VHS) was around back then.

I'd think if a player can be found, the output can be sent to a PC pretty easily. I could be wrong.

Re: Who wantes to see 1973 dealer/promo DVD's?

The current format is a proprietary 8mm film with magnetic audio that GM used in the 70's. We're talking about film. The cartridges themselves are like a 4x size 8 track tape. The players are nearly impossible to find at all and even more rare working. If we can get the media on these cartridges out of the hands of two people and put it into the hands of a few hundred, isn't that better? There's also no saying that they will necessarily be ruined.

Don't get miffed because I suggested looking for a cheaper and less invasive alternative... Maybe you should have mentioned the format in the beginning. If that's the only way it works for me.

I'd love to see what's on the film and would likely contribute...

I'm not miffed, I'm just trying to explain what we're working with here.

Here's a pic of the player I ripped off from another forum. Anybody have one of these?

I would think $25.00 would be a reasonable target that you could sell them for ....most snowmobile/truck race/rally dvds sell in this range ....I would be very interested in the 79 or 80 models ....

Re: Who wantes to see 1973 dealer/promo DVD's?

Just to clarify, not looking to make money on these, just get as many as we can converted without having to spend it all out of my own pocket.

I don't want to get into any trouble re-selling these for copywrite reasons...besides, I am an enthusiast before I am a business man. I didn't make a dime on the laserdisc conversions, but was thrilled to know those who participated enjoyed the final product.

If the 73 set can be converted, I'll get Joes 79 set somehow and we can do those too.

I'm with you guys on the truck and 4x4 being the ones that I would most be interested in, but would love to see them all if they can be converted to DVD. Keep us updated. Hope we get enough people to do this because it would be a really cool DVD to have! ...Joe
