Re: Coal Cannister

I got mine with no exhaust on it (cut y pipe) and here in MA you can get up to a $10,000 fine fro removing a cat. That is right 10 grand. So before I get here inspected I wanna fix the exhaust.

Re: Coal Cannister

Yo! 84 400!
I'm sure that you can call one of the inspection centers, and honestly find out EXACTLY what's required in your state, for your vehicle. They must be able to provide you with that information, especially with that kind of possible penalty!
Summit Racing has high flow cats that I'd bet you could use and still get low restriction exhaust. Are they gonna test your output on a 1977 vehicle?!
Best of luck, Todd.

Re: Coal Cannister

Todd ,
Naw they do not tail pipe it. Just visual. So i could use a cut and welded one if I wanted. But I too would rather have a cleaner running vehicle. I am going to a service station on Friday and asking about allowable rust so I will be sure to ask about the cat thing too. Course I can't drive my truck there because you need plates and insurance and once u get plates and insurance you only have 7 days to get it inspected.... I really wish we could get 20 day temporary tags.......

Federal law states it must have the emissions equipment it came with from the factory. you could run two highflow cats. States vary on how strict they are. I don't know what your inspection or laws are in texas. I know alot of people who just delete them totaly on older vehicals and never look back. Again it all depends on your states laws.

Re: Coal Cannister

LPStreetKing! Check with a local inspection station for verification, but I'd imagine that you simply need a catalytic converter between the exhaust manifold and the muffler on each outlet pipe.
If Texas inspections depend on gas output, you'll have to check further to determine what cats you'll need for your truck, but most regulations for older trucks are as 84 400 states, simply visual,..just needs to be there.
High flow cats, like Summit Racing's, will keep restriction to a minimum, act to reduce emissions, and satisfy the inspectors. The only warning on the cats is that they're not legal in California for '96 and up OBDII-equipped vehicles.
Magnaflows, for up to 6.2L engines, with 3" in/out are $79. High flow Summits (stainless steel shells), of the same in/out size, are $92. And Dynomaxs are available for a bit more.
Todd.

Re: Coal Cannister

yeah 454 ho is right everything 1978 and back with a GWV of 6000lbs or more has HD emissions. 1979 and up they raised it to 8500GWV and up to get Hd emissions. I have HD emissions on mine and all I have is the PCV valve and the heat valve in the exhaust to warm it up faster. But in Barrow Co. GA there's no emissions testing on anything, period.

Re: Coal Cannister

Yo! flamingbig10!
Negative. My '76 Camaro is 32 years old and is required to have both exhausts enter a single cat, and split to dual mufflers, then exit. That is it's stock design and required by law. As I stated (referring to LPStreetKing's truck), now that I have duals, I could get away with a cat on each exhaust leg.
Better check with an emissions station since this would be a federal law. I know that the local muffler shops would NOT fabricate my true dual exhaust due to this law. Todd.

Re: Coal Cannister

Yo! Don't have to have emissions tested (tailpipe) but you SURE gotta have the origonal configuration,...federal law. My Camaro doesn't have to have emissions inspection, but I still am required to have the catalytic converter since it was the origonal configuration. Check it, Todd.

Re: Coal Cannister

Todd is right on. Federal law trumps state law. Now weather o not the states inspection stations are going to check for cats is a whole different story...... As I mentioned earlier I know alot of guys who after there cars became classics hacked off the cat. Most stations around here do not care if a classic has a cat or not. But it really depends on the oinspector. They have been cracking down on them here so alot of stations are going by the book on there inspections. My 84 was perviosly registered in Texas and it has a y pipe going to a cat then out to duals. I do like the sound and flow of no cats but not the smell. With the high flow ones they make now a days why not put them on. Then you do not have to ever wory about visual inspections. Heck I know people running dummy cats (gutted or cut and welded over pipe) and at the flow rate of the high flows why bother??

Bottom line is federal law requires it have the emissions equipment it came with but state inspectors may not care.
