Exterior Spare tire holde bad for body?
Is an exterior spare tire holder with a spare attached bad for the body? What about with the top off? I was told I should get rid of it. What do you guys think?
Thanks, Travis Last edited by lgdpt; 12-11-2008 at 12:45 PM. |

Re: Exterior Spare tire holde bad for body?
Does anyone know where I could get a factory inside tire carrier? Or how much they normally sell for?

You can find the inside ones for sale occassionally on Ebay. Several members have them as well. Huck has one for sale, 75 bucks. If interested PM him.
As for the one you have, you should just ship it off to me, i'll take it off your hands.

Re: Exterior Spare tire holde bad for body?
I have one on my truck and it hasn't caused any issues. You can't really put anything bigger than a 33" tire on them. If you decide to pull it off and sell it, make sure you get the brackets that are inside the bed wall. (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=316273)
I've seen a few interior carriers here on the board. I think they usually go for around $75. I think I've heard either 31" or 33" tires are the max height for these.

as long as you don't back into anything or get rear ended by a big truck it shouldn't hurt the body.

Re: Exterior Spare tire holde bad for body?
Mine has been on since the truck was about a month old, with no problems. If you use your truck for camping or hunting, and load down the back with supplies, and have a flat. You'll be glad it's on the outside. I had to unload everything to get to mine between Yuma and Tuscon in July. Was the last time my spare was inside the truck.

Mine has been on for 30+ years too, however, I was just told by a guy that has 3 1st generations, that he has seen the external mount crack the body (several times).

Re: Exterior Spare tire holde bad for body?
I've had two K5s with swing aways, and I had one ready to go on one of my others when I sold the truck. I suppose if you are doing some extreme off-roading with serious flexing it could cause an issue. Or, if you drive without the swing-away securely closed it could cause damage, but for daily driving and light off-road, it shouldn't be an issue.
I think it would take a lot to pull the curved steel plates though the body skin and cause a crack. Several board members have made their own custom solutions. Check out what Burt4x4 and BobbyK have done.

Re: Exterior Spare tire holde bad for body?
I dont know about the good old stuff but some of the newer zr2 blazers only show to be bad on the body when they get worn pins and bushings they start rattling
or dont get latched properly and swing open going down the road and do some damage |

Re: Exterior Spare tire holde bad for body?
Does anyone have any pictures of what they built to haul the spare on the back. I personally need the inside room and want to build something to hold up my 35" spare. Thanks!!

Re: Exterior Spare tire holde bad for body?
I don't have pictures but you can look up what BobbyK has done. I believe his is mounted to his custom built rear bumper.
Burt4x4 has some pictures posted at http://www.geocities.com/baja/5099/

Quote:
That rear carrier I had back then was made by Kayline, yup the soft top company, that is when I learned about not connecting a swing out gate to both the body and the bumper/frame. Not very trail friendly when flexing...I removed that carrier LONG TIME AGO..plus it would only fit a bald 33" tire with the gerry cans on... Good Luck Burt
