Door Wont Shut!

i need some help with the doors on my 63 chevy. the problem started when i took it home from the paint shop when i put in weatherstripping. im not sure what caused it or anything, so i need some help. since i put the new weatherstripping in the door wont shut all the way. it seems as if it shuts all the way in the front and pinches the stripping in fromt before the back closes. im not sure if im describing it well, so take a look at the pics and let me know whats wrong. thanks for the help
heres some side pics to show how much it is out...

here are some gap issues that i am having....

what i have tried to do was adjust because i thought that it might be hitting but i had no luck

any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Re: Door Wont Shut!

Might have to shim the bottom hinge mount, that would take care of the high front/low back. You can also try to adjust the strike plate inward to pull the door tighter in. Most new weatherstripping is tight until it shapes itself better to the door. I have had a few customers have the same problem, adjusted the striker, then have to readjust it back after a few weeks or so depending on the temps outside after it shapes itself.

Re: Door Wont Shut!

It will take a while for the weather strip to conform to the door closed on it.
keep in mind that these were utilitarian by nature, and gm probably didn't send them out with perfect gaps from the factory.

Re: Door Wont Shut!

i figured that it would take a bit before the weatherstripping would fit to the doors, but it has been about 6 months since i put it in. but how do i adjust the striker? i took a look at it, but i didnt see any room for adjustment.

Re: Door Wont Shut!

take the lower mount loose and shim behind the mount plate. The striker on the door frame needs to be loosened and tapped inward. Try just a little at a time until you get the fit you want. Jerry

Question Re: Door Wont Shut!

Hi squizzleboy,

Did you ever get your doors closed? I'm having the same issues on my '63 from the weatherstripping I purchased from Brothers. It looks like a quality product but I swear the engineering mold the manufacture uses is crap. I've had mine installed for about 3 mo. and it leaks worse than with no weatherstripping at all.

I'm willing to adjust my hinges if I have to, but it would suck if I had to end up adjusting other panels to match.

Re: Door Wont Shut!

I am having the same problem with my 66. My passenger door turned out ok, but the drivers is having the exact same problem as yours. I have the brothers seals as well. We have tried a few adjustments but no luck. My drivers will shut and seat right only if i slam i mean really slam the door.

Re: Door Wont Shut!

I have the same problem on the drivers side door on my 62 but I think it is caused by the window frame of the door being bent in but I'm not completely sure. If anyone has any ideas I would love to here them also.

Re: Door Wont Shut!

a trick i've heard of to "break in" the weather striping is to remove the door strikes, hook a ratchet strap from door to door and put tension on the doors pulling against weather striping. let it set for several days, check the tension daily and ratchet the strap up a couple clicks to keep the doors under tension......
it is also a good idea to remove the strikes when adjusting the door alignment, for two reasons, one it saves the headache of a jammed door and it allows you to get the door alignment right with out the strikes interfering

I once saw on TV a guy adjust a door on an S10 by bending the frame a bit. It was to titen up the weatherstrip. I cant remember how he got leverage on it.
