hood lock
Anyone come up with a way to lock your hood, not using the locking hood pins because I really don't want to go that route cosmetically. I have a few of the cable locks for guns and was thinking of a way to secure the hood latch handle to the center upright that it's right beside. But I can't quite figure it out so it'd be easy to remove/install with the grill on.
Any ideas or successes? |

Re: hood lock
I believe I've seen on here where someone modified the radiator support to house hood pins from a Pontiac Soltice. I could be wrong...

Re: hood lock
I'm interested in this as well. I'm looking to put on a grill that would block the hood release.

Re: hood lock
Could rig up a cable style hod release like most newer cars and trucks use.Or the old redneck way chain the latch to something with a pad lock.

Re: hood lock
I worked on a Grand Marquis the other day. Maybe someone could install that hood latch on the 73-80 truck. When the latch is pulled in the car a little secondary latch rod shoots out of the grille and hides away when you close the hood. Just an idea...

Re: hood lock
Why not just use a factory inside cab hood release from a late (78-80) truck?

Re: hood lock
That is a possibility but honestly I had no clue when internal releases were put on these trucks...

Re: hood lock
I've got small chains that attaches to each side of the lever, and drops down each side of the center latch support. The chains are locked together under the center support which prevents you from lifting the latch. Each side of the latch had a small hole in it from the factory, so I notch the end links of the chain on the side with a hack saw, then slipped the links into the holes on the latch. Almost like the holes were there for this purpose.
I had a better idea in mind for a lock bar that will be easier to deal with when I get the chance, but I did the redneck chain method for now so I can sleep better at night.

Re: hood lock
I also went the redneck route and used a plastic-coated steel bicycle locking cable with a loop on each end. It's wrapped around either the frame rail or the steering box, I forget which. One loop barely comes above the radiator support, and the other runs up through two of the slots on the underside of the hood, then back to the other loop, where it's padlocked. The hood will only open ~6 inches when it's locked.

Re: hood lock
I think I'll do something like tha chain thing instead of swapping out all the parts needed for an inside latch setup. Any pics would be great..
I'm thinking of attaching a piece to the lever itself and making it long enough so it'll hang down to the frame/bumper area and have maybe another short piece down there then use a padlock to connect them which would leave the lock kinda hidden by the bumper. Unlocking it would take a few more seconds but it's like insurance, "pay a little now or alot later" if a thief happens upon the truck. Yes of course if they want something they'll get it somehow but for the casual thief or troublemaker it'd be a deterrant. better than them just being able to open the hood and wreak havoc or swipe a battery/MSD box/carb/etc.. |
