I'm no expert but, hydraulics right, when the engine is hot, I have always backed off until they clatter, run down slowly until quiet, and then add 1/2 turn CW. I believe a Motors Manual will tell you to go one turn after quiet. To prevent the mess, you can use pushrod clips, or better a cut out valve cover with a good gasket so you can keep your motor and compartment clean. Other more experienced may offer other advice. This has been fine on my stock and reworked SBC's
