Cab Windshield area Repair

I am seriously considering a '68 Chev. dually I found online. Bed is great, tires very good, frame solid. It's got a 307 w/ a 4speed. The cab is really not bad for 40+ years came from TN. I think I can figure my way around the usual cab repairs. Here's my question: Above the windshield especially inside, it's pretty rusted out. Is there a way you guys repair that area? If so, how is it accomplished? Could this be a deal breaker? Thanks to any all who advise.

There is a piece that is sold to replace the inside windshield piece. Don't think there is any for the outside of the windshield. Check out some of the site vendor's, they should be able to hook you up. Should not be to difficult to replace, like replacing any sheetmetal, will take some time. Depends on if the cab has any other rust problems. All depends upon how much work you want to put into it.

WOW! That was a quick response. Thanks 88 I appreciate that. The rest of the cab is pretty good. I'll check more thourghly tomorrow. It still has most of the original undercoat on it. Looks like rocker(s) only, floor's solid.
Fenders behind the bumper are gone. New fenders, or repair? Oh.....FREE yes I said FREE wasp nests with the purchase!

If the outside or window channel is rusted, I would think finding a donor cab roof would be the way to go?

One more thing....This guy says he has an "open" title. Have any of you heard of this? Is it done commonly?

Usualy an "Open Title" means that whoever's name on the tiltle has signed off on the title, but the new owner never transfered ownership. WES

I had the same problem on my truck,rust all the way across inside the cab.





It was a job I really dreaded to have to do and put it off till last. Once I got started on it though it wasn't that hard of a fix. I made my own patches from narrow strips of sheetmetal,one for the curved part on each end about 12-14 inches long and a third on in the middle where it's straighter.



Didn't take much filler work at all after I got it all welded and ground down smooth

if you really want to fix rust in this area you will have to pull the roof skin off and look at it. other wise the rust will be there and get worse.

Rob; The roof skin? From the interior side of the cab? Is that removed in one piece, or must I just cut it out and replace as necessary?

No this is the out roof skin it will allow you a top side view of the rust then you can repair and epoxy prime everything to prevent addtional rust.... Check out project cod fish in the build section that is what eb did to my cab.

I've found the easiest way is to replace the whole top if you can find a donor. It's alot easier than welding and grinding upside down.I've done this twice and it's really not that hard if you can weld and fabricate.

Hey Greg;
What a generous offer! I would love to but.... I'm not sure I can go ahead with this project now. Although as the days go on, I'm fallin in love w/ this dually. I think it would be relatively easy to get this to at least a daily driver. But I may have hit a snag with my home owners assoc. I'm trying to figure a way to have it here (along w/ my truck, and wife's car). Plus; I think at the very least, I'd have to remove a few layers of frame to bed shims to get it a little lower so it's not so obvious. Anyway once more thanks for the offer.

i picked up new inner fender wells from a swap meet brand new from a vender for under $200... u should do it that way.. because i was going to order them online and found out shipping them puppies is as much as the item..
