No not THAT rearend..

The shop was cutting the stock brackets off my rearend in my 63 chevy pickup with a torch. The yoke was pointing down at the ground. Water began to leak out of the yoke and it was a pretty good sized puddle...

He didnt crack open the rearend to look inside. We were wondering what this could be and if any of you have experienced this before? We were thinking maybe water over the years got inside the rearend or something..

I just thought Id ask if this means I get to buy a new rearend or what..

P.S. I live in a apartment so I cant do my own work. Just letting you know before you give me a hard time

I think you need to pull the cover and see what it looks like. There is no "good" reason why water is in there.

Yea I pretty much figured that but was just curious of how it happend..

Theres a cheap 9 inch ford for sale local..

For a minute there I thought something was wrong with your truck

Was there a hitch on the truck I've seen guys at the marina lauching boats and totally submerge their rear ends.

What about condensation from heating with the torch? A definite possibility in my thinking anyway......I would do a service on that rear end as soon as possible.

Maybe the vent tube isnt properly "vented" with a check valve and the rear was allowed to fill with rain and various other sources of moisture??

Not sure how it got in there. Several have made some logical suggestions. In any case, I think it's a very bad sign that warrants popping it open for sure, and possibly tearing down for at least new seals. If you find rust, you may be in for more work.

My question...not to sound like a 'donkey'. Are you absolutely sure it is water? Could it be diff fluid that boiled under the hot temps of cutting and welding, etc? Just a thought I had.

If you got gear lube hot enough to be that thin, you would never mistake it for water. It has a smell that anyone would recognize as bad/burnt.

The vent and condensation issues are the most likely, but submersion is not out of the question either.

Update on the situation - The guy doing the work pulled off the cover it was nasty inside real rusty and the gear oil looked like mud. The ring and pinion had grooves wore into them. The guy doing the work said he has never seen one that looked that bad. After looking it over he found that the stock vent setup had been removed at somepoint so there was just a open hole. Thats how the water got in..

Sooooo I had to spend another $300 bucks at summit on a new Richmond 3:73 gear set and mega install kit..

Yes that sux, but at least you have no more water oozing out of your rear end....and that's a good thing.
