Re: my total $ in my truck........it scares me

so far I've got three file folders full of receipts in my file cabinet, and my wife asked me the same thing, how much have i got into the restore of the truck, a 1970 Chevy 1/2'er, ( damn I've got to learn how to work this new digital camera) and i just got some new wheels,15x 8's and tires on it last week, all white, it's called the "Ghost", MY wife guys ,,is VERY knowledgeable about Chevy trucks and GMC trucks, and cars, she worked at GM for about 28 years, in Van Nuys, Calif .building them and working on the assembly lines, so i don't doubt her word about what she knows,, even the auto parts guys here, have a hard time with her when they find out that she knows what she's talking about. so far as for the total cost,, "I'd say priceless" so now I'm going to go out on the limb and say about $15,000 so far and we (my wife and I) are not done yet. Re: my total $ in my truck........it scares me
I don't believe anyone goes into it thinking they are going to turn it around in to a huge money maker. You might do that a couple of items but in the long run you will not be making a fortune off this hobby. I don't keep tabs for that reason. I just recently started on a restore on a set of buddy buckets thinking about how much I will have invested when finally done. Really isn't worth $1200 to $1400 just to sit on. But hey, it's a hobby like the rest of the hobbys, over priced and to others not in the hobby seems like a waste of time and money.

Re: my total $ in my truck........it scares me
I use to keep track, but once the number got over 30k - oh 8 years or so ago...
I never even think about it anymore, the only time I have to is when I talk to insurance agents. I just tell them to insure it for the same amount of a new Suburban's value, even then I have it insured with a hefty umbrella policy. My Dad just asked me about this just last Friday, and I told him I plan to dump about 4 grand in it soon to get it ready for a show. He then said "will you be done then?", I told him that I will never be "done" since I enjoy working on it so much.

Re: my total $ in my truck........it scares me
heck...its a hobby! i know of some people that put more in golf clubs than some put in there trucks. i also know a woman that just bought a sewing machine "computer run" for 6500. and she makes clothes for a hobby. so,the money ive got in my truck is more than i ever could get out of it but i like the "hobby". now a good investment right now would be realestate!....

Re: my total $ in my truck........it scares me
you can't take it with you when you pass on,,away,, or what have you,,but just think of how you felt restoring the truck when you have it right there in front of you, makes a hobby seem worthless, when you can count the hours you put into making it look just the way you want it to look. I've had my truck for over 18 years now and almost sold it a couple of times, glad i didn't,, I'm not looking to see how much i can make out of restoring it , i just want this ole friend of mine to last me until i pass and then I'm done .
who ever gets it next can enjoy it ,,or do what ever they want with it, i sure won't be around to tell them how to .., and besides, your going to be in a small box just big enough for your body,, what the heck are you going to do with a truck buried next to you ???????? nuff said, my thoughts only, have a great restore guys,,,larry

Re: my total $ in my truck........it scares me
I'd guess around $25k in mine... Dad bought it when I was 3, for $750.00, and I'm 23 now. We started on it when I was 13, had it ready to roll when I was 16. Everything from shortening the frame to mounting the last piece (the hood) done by us. Only thing that we didn't do was the paint, for good reason haha...

Re: my total $ in my truck........it scares me
I paid $1500 for my orange blazer. Probably 10 years ago or so. I rebuilt an engine, trans, front and rear ends(with lockers and rear gears) lift kit f&r springs, wheels, tires, gas tank, skid plate, body mounts, built bumpers, roll cage, auto meter gauges. Pretty much everything mechanical. I added it up once and was around $10,000. And it still looks like a $500 POS!! HaHa!
Whatever you think it will cost to build... double that and you might be in the ballpark. Just don't tell the wife!
