How do you disassemble Rear Shackle on 48
I was trying to disassemble the rear shackle setup on my 48 and It appears the top and bottom pins are pressed in?? It has a bolt in the middle of the shackle that was not big deal to remove. Any tips on how to get the pin that goes through the spring out? It has a grease zerk on one side and a flat end on the other. Thanks

Re: How do you disassemble Rear Shackle on 48
Thanks for the info. I see they are threaded in the center, but it does not appear they tread to get them out. The manual just says, take the shackle plates off. It is not that easy, it looks to me like in the pictures the ends of the bushing are pressed on??? I appreciate the drawings, but still am at a loss as to how to get the bushing and threaded pin out of the shackle. I will mess with it some more this evening. Thanks

Not that its much help to you, but I took off the old shackle mounts and put in a late style shackle mount. I did this so I could more easily change out bushings, springs, etc.
http://www.datinfab.com/index.asp?Pa...ROD&ProdID=275 I know that doesn't help if you are doing a restoration. I figure it was worth the mention though. |

Do you maybe have the pin type shackle instead? If you click through the pages it shows some of the other types. I don't recall having any problems with removal of them on my 53 or my son's 50.

Re: How do you disassemble Rear Shackle on 48
The end of the shackles have the grease zerts like in the manual. Mine is a 48. I assume they are the threaded type. But in the picture, it does not look like the threads go into the shackles, they look to be pressed on. I was going to try to take a big pry bar tonight and see if I can open it up. It looks like the only place the threading is an issue is in the middle of the spring portion. I do know the front of the spring is threaded because I already took them out. But the front had a nut and bolt head to grab on to, the rear shackle has nothing to get ahold of.

Take out the grease fittings,
remove the bolt that hold the shackle ends together. Hit the shackle thin edge with a hammer it should break loose. Grab the shackle pin with some vise grips and screw it out. They can be difficult to get out. I have in the past replaced the entire frame mount because I couldn't get the pin out. |

You are the winner! Several strokes with a hammer got them loose. Thank you for the help.
