Moving the tank does not allow the seat to go back further. I had the tank out of my '62 to repair a pinhole and got to lookin'.
The top of the seat already hits the back of the cab even with the tank in place.
I do agree with the fumes and storage issue.The filler neck gaskets are usually the culprit and on a hot day it can be pretty nasty.

I think my bench is a little newer ('67-'72) and could go back another three inches or so were it not for the tank.
