need help with hei rotor

Hey there im new to this.Picked up a 80 scottsdale 350/400/. when throttle is wide open, 4bbl kicks in but the engine is surging. can smell gas afterword.any ideas? also how do you get at the rotor to change it. Thanks

there is a adjustment on the right side of the quadrajet secondary to adjust the tension on the top butterfly .when the butterfly opens it lifts the needles out of the main jets, when the tension isn't right the needles won't drop back in the jets and close off the secondary fuel. that could be your surging and fuel smell. check to see if the top butterfly close's freely when you open it by hand. to get to the rotor remove the distributer cap and there it is. hope this helps Jim

cap comes off with four screw J-clamps located near the base of the cap. Make sure it goes back on the right way though..
