'66 *Factory* A/C question

Sorry for this newb question, but was A/C in '66 a factory or DIO option? Or could it have been either/or? Mine has it (works too), and someone asked me the other day and I had no clue. Thx.

Re: '66 *Factory* A/C question

I believe the dealer installed were knee-freezers, but I could be wrong. The factory set-ups were big ductwork deals with the vents in the dash.

Re: '66 *Factory* A/C question

I'd have to say factory installed.
The reason I say this is I have one and the x-braces in front of the radiator are off-set forward to allow the condenser to fit. These braces are rivited in.
The control holes in the dash are in different position compared to non-a/c.
Plus the duct work!
Mike.

Re: '66 *Factory* A/C question

Accessesories installation manual for 63 dealer installation shows the removal of the cross braces in order to install the condenser. No in dash air in 64 i believe only 65-66. Can anyone verify this fact?

Re: '66 *Factory* A/C question

I'll have to look at the cross braces the next time I'm up in Flagstaff where it is garaged. Riveted = factory, bolted = DIO is what I'm betting. While not a quick install, I'm sure dealers could have still done these through '66 if not '72. Square bodies, forgetaboutit!

Re: '66 *Factory* A/C question

My truck with the a/c is a 65 Chevy. It's a parts truck for my 64 GMC.
I know 67 up requires different firewall and/or dash cut-outs.For the dealer to install a/c in these would require some serious metal work.I put factory a/c in my 78 Chevy truck.

Re: '66 *Factory* A/C question

1964 Accessories Installation Reference Manual shows a in dash air conditioning unit. Different compressor unit for the 348/409.
One template to cut out the firewall for passing the fresh air flap. One template for the cutout of the dash for the air deflectors. Template for drilling out the dash for the control cable.
