How much can a 84 GMC tow?

I have a short bed 305 1984 GMC but don't have the manual? It is all stock and I 'm want to know what it will tow because I want to buy a camper. Does any know exactly? Can some who has a manual look it up for me please?

Thanks,
Ben

It depends on the hitch, the condition of the drivetrain, and the tow weight that the truck is rated. You have to be careful with this stuff in TN. I got pulled over once in TN, and they really picked me apart. Luckily I was within the legal limits by 34# .

Re: How much can a 84 GMC tow?

The original manual for my '79 says a C10 can tow 8000# max, but it makes no distinction about wheel base, which is important. I would GUESS more like 6000# would be more reasonable. 6K is what Blazers are rated at.

Re: How much can a 84 GMC tow?

most half ton trucks are rated 7500 lbs idk on the square bodies though. blazer i do know are less due to they have a few 100 lbs already dropped on the back end and have lighter springs cuase ppl sit back there. ive never been stopped in tn thats odd btw.

I've never heard of any of that and I live here. Actually, TN doesn't even require a tag on trailers unless it's considered "semi" use. I use to pull whatever my '85 C-10's 305 could handle. Cars, trailers, gravel, rock, other trucks etc. Never any problems with the cops either. $.02

Benntn, you're not too far from me either. I'm in Buffalo Valley and I'll be in Lebanon the end of this month for the Mopar Show and again in October for their OktoberFest. Maybe I'll see your truck at that one. There's a show Next Sat off of 840.

Re: How much can a 84 GMC tow?

Well, they sure pulled me over. 2 State Trooper's and some DOT guy. I had the bed full and a car trailer with the BMW in my Avatar in tow. Everything was all "tagged" up and all, but they weighed me and I was only 34# under my total limit. It was freaky. They checked everything down to the load range on my tires. The truck didn't have any issues, and I wasn't even doing the "Bubba" sag in the rear (load levers on the trailer). I think they were profiling people from the car show because they had several other people pulled over as I traveled home. My .02

85Bowtie,

I've never been to Buffalo Valley. What's OktoberFest? I'm not up to date on the upcoming car shows. I like going but I didn't know about these. I might go to the one Next Sat off 840. What's the info on it? If it is nice, I might drive my truck there but it ant no show truck though lol. I'm waiting on window vent seals, so it sits in the garage until the parts come. The window would leak if rains or it would get stolen because and the vent frame is out still too. So I don't drive it unless I'm just ridding around and the sun is out .

Re: How much can a 84 GMC tow?

Ok thanks to all who replied but I still would like to just see the secs from a book. I've never purchased or pulled anything, so I want to make sure I don't get a camper that is to big for my truck.

Buffalo Valley is the next exit past Carthage as your heading east on I-40, 268

The show on the 20th or whatever that saturday is will be in Gladeville or something that sounds similar off 840 going towards Murfreesboro.

Oktoberfest is the car show they have in Lebanon at the Wilson County Bank off hwy 70 around the 3rd sunday in october, lots off cool cars and trucks, original and modified.

I've been to the Oktoberfest once a few years ago. I live real close to that Bank now so I might go. Gladeville is not that much further from me either. I think I've ridden my motorcycle on the "Nashville HWY" in Carthage. Nice curvy road and scenery.
