Dana 44 front axle hubs question...
I had to pull apart my hubs to inspect for a noise/vibration on my Dana 44 (from a 76 K5). It took me a few weekends to get it back together since I never had a lot of time... So, now I've forgotten... when you've gotten everything back together in the hub (this is still fulltime 4wd) does the snap ring go in the first or second grove on the axle shaft - the one farthest away or closest to the diff??

Re: Dana 44 front axle hubs question...
I`ve never messed with full-time,but I`d think it would be the inner groove if it will work. You don`t want much slop because the idea is to keep the axle u-joint centered between the ball joint vertical center.hopefully someone with experience with the full-times will know for sure.I know on what I`ve worked on the snap ring is snug.I usually have to pry on the axle yokes outward to get the groove out to accept the snap ring.

Re: Dana 44 front axle hubs question...
Thanks guys, I've never thought about looking at LMC.
Right now, it is on the outer one and it is not snug, really... I can push the drive flange in further, to the second groove.

Hey Tink, LMC doesn't show pics of the hub, but my Haynes manual shows it in the outter groove closest to the dust cap...

Re: Dana 44 front axle hubs question...
Way to go,Chuck!
I guess snug wasn`t the right word.Just not sloppy? It`s not really "prying" either.More like "apply pressure".I always figured this was due to the fresh packed grease in the inner hub and spindle.

Re: Dana 44 front axle hubs question...
I had to doubble check. My first truck was full time 4x4, but that was 20 years ago. I did like how simple it was with just a spring, a drive flange and a dust cap...

Re: Dana 44 front axle hubs question...
It goes on the outer one. There is a spring and a large "cupped" washer that goes in there too. The "washer" goes first, with the cuped part inward. This keeps the spring out of the wheel bearing. The spring is there to keep the axle snug against the back of the spindle. This keeps the axle joint centered in the balljoint's pivot and it keeps the axle seal firmly against the spindle, keeping the mud/water/yuck out of the needle bearing.
