Transmission Question

Hey Guys,

I am getting my ride back together and I have it in a bunch of pieces right now, and was thinking about a my transmission. Right now, I have it setup with 350/350. But I am redoing everything, and I have to cut the drive shaft anyway. So I was thinking should I get a 700r4, right now is the best time. The big problem is I really don't have a bunch of extra cash.. And I really don't know how much a used runner would be? I don't need a new 1,500 tranny right now. Just thought it would be a good time right now, cause everything is apart.

Let me know you guys think??

Thanks

Re: Transmission Question

Yeah, now would be a good time to change transmissions. Changing to a 700R4 will require the necessary parts to properly adjust the TV cable in addition to purchasing a transmission. You might check your local Craigslist and see if you can find a good trans in your price range. Look for one in the '88-'91 year range. They are updated from the earlier versions.

Thanks Captainfab.

What do you think a good price range would be?

Thanks again!

Re: Transmission Question

i picked up a used 700r4 out of a 89 camaro with 77,000 miles for 200 bucks on a local listing site. i threw a new filter on it and its ready to go. You should be able to find a rebuilt one for around 700 max. Or you could go with a used one and do a rebuild that would cost anywhere from $180 to $300

Re: Transmission Question

Dude... You must have a pick and pull near you somewhere down there. $125 for a tranny. So many clunkers and the trannies are still good. If you find one in a van. Those are the easiest ones to pull seeing the engine cover comes off. Also don't forget the TV cable and if you are running a carb, look for an 86 model with a carb and take the linkage off. Don't use the tranny from an 86 though. Only 88 to 92 and nothing over 90 if you don't want to mess with electronic speedo.

Re: Transmission Question

Full size vans used cable speedos even newer than 90. I have a 91 model van trans that way.

Re: Transmission Question

Don't get one if it came out of a 6 cyl. they are not as strong as a V8 Truck or full size van.
