swapping sm465 4spd to nv4500 5 spd
Hi all, has anyone swapped out their sm465 manual to the nv4500 for the overdrive capability? If yes, did you need to make any adjustments to the floor boards for shifter locations?
Thanks |

Rust Buster and Musclerodz have...
use the Advanced Search function to search for their names in the 4x4 build area... advanced adapters make an NP205 kit as well..

Re: swapping sm465 4spd to nv4500 5 spd
Hey guys thanks for the info!
I just got a 72 3/4 4x4 4spd 350 from a guy in nevada. The truck had absolutely no rust accept in the area on the floor boards where they join the rockers. I have never seen a truck in such good shape. I am trying to get as much information about what I want to do before I dig in. I am having the entire body pulled and all the body work done first before I start the mechanicals. This is opposite what Is usually done of course, but I wanted to take my time on the mechanicals. I'm not a body guy so I wanted to get that done with first. Here is where I started. The cab has now been gutted and it is in the body shop. The work should be done this summer. |

that is a nice truck... the only fault in your theory is that if you make changes to the floor or firewall due to upgrades, then you will be cutting new paint and possibly patching other holes that aren't needed anymore!
welcome to the board, im in PA... special-K and others just had a MD get together... you should plan to come to Carlisle, PA for the shows this summer.

Re: swapping sm465 4spd to nv4500 5 spd
That is a drawback for sure, but I am having the work done in Montana as I have no place to put the truck at the moment here in MD. I plan to drive it to the east coast this summer or transport it and do a partial teardown when I get it here. I really want to strip it all the way down but just don't have the luxury of a garage to tie up for a year. I plan to make this a daily driver as well.
I will definitely check out carlisle this year. |

Re: swapping sm465 4spd to nv4500 5 spd
you can check out most of what was required to install in the 68 k20 we did int 4x4 project forum. Biggest mod we had to do was extend the hump in the floor all the way back under the buddy bucket. Also required moving the engine foward to the 2 wd position, raising 1" and notching cross member to clear axle. A lifted truck could get away with not having to make clearance of the oil pan to front axle problem. Used the nv4500 shifter and orginal tc shifter with extra bend in it. converted to hydraulic clutch as well. it was alot of work to make it fit and everything work. we used the AA nv4500 bellhousing and 205 adapter. castings were great, instructions and customer service less than par

Musclerodz - given the amount of work required to swap in the NV4500 , what are your thoughts on a Gear Vendor overdrive as an alternative?

Re: swapping sm465 4spd to nv4500 5 spd
My thoughts exactly, I have heard from some people that the nv4500 swap wasn't fun but not as much work as you have eluded to. I was thinking I would just have to modify the floor a bit, driveshafts and clutch linkage. Not relocate the motor. A overdrive for my sm465 is sounding pretty damn good at the moment. I can have my sm465 rebuilt for about $1250 and just add an overdrive?? Or perhaps just go to 373's frt and back and stick with the sm465.
Not preferred, but is the overdrive advantage all that? |

I swapped my th400 for a NV4500 using AA's parts. It went really smooth. It's pricey but it works, FYI

How would you attach a gv unit to the TC case?
