Re: 1990 Single Cab Dually
As far as the Gen III swap, I'm not going to say its easy, but it is popular. There are companies out there with mounts and such. I would recommend finding a wrecked complete truck with the 6.0L and get the transmission, ECM, belt drive, intake, manifolds and harness. I would go with the 4L80E transmission instead of the 4L60E. The 60E is a good transmission for a light duty truck, but the 4L80E is what would come in a truck like yours. You will need the ECM to control the trans and engine especially if you go with the stock fuel injection. If you get a donor from 04-up (maybe 03), the throttle body will be electronic (no throttle cable) and require the gas pedal from the donor or you will need to find a 99-02 (maybe 03) throttle body that used a cable. You may or may not know that the 4.8/5.3/6.0/6.2L truck engines and the 5.7L car engine (LS1) are completely different than what is in your 93. So, theres not much that can be used from your old truck (doesn't sound like there is much left anyway). If your old truck came originally equipped with a 4L80E and you have your original ECM, you could get a 4L80E from a similar year truck, a spacer to adapt to the back of the 6.0L and you could run a carb setup and have the chip in the ECM reprogrammed to ignore the sensors that will not be used on the carb setup.

You edited while I was typing, reguardless if it came with a big block or small block, the TH350, TH400, 700R4/4L60, 4L60E and 4L80E all use the same bolt pattern to the block. You will need the correct flexplate, but they are available from most parts stores.

Re: 1990 Single Cab Dually
Why not go for an LS-9? How's about an Allison automatic or a 6-speed manual?

Re: 1990 Single Cab Dually
if it were me, I would go 454/TH400 or 4l80. Emmisions will be a B tho, to bad your in Cal. and you cant get away with a diesel swap, truck would be pretty rad with a built 6.2 in it.

Re: 1990 Single Cab Dually
I understand that the 5.3 is all you can afford, but the swap will cost a good bit more than you're paying for the engine. Those swaps ain't cheap, I looked very hard into dropping a 6.2 into my '81 Corvette, by the time I got everything I needed it was a lot cheaper to build a strong 406 AND add a lot of bling.
Plus, that dually is a heavy pig, you need torque to move it. That's why the suggestions for a big block. You can build one that'll pass emissions, too. Cores around here are less than LS cores, too. |
