Saftey issues on 88-91 burbs?
I thought I read where the trans can overheat, causing overflow to spill on the cat and causing a fire? Was there a recall or fix? It one thing I worry about with buying a burb.
Any other safety issues on them? |

Yes - the fix was a trans dipstick (indicator stick) with a toggle type handle on the top. You insert the stick and clamp it over, locking it in the tube.
Should have more details at a local dealer. K

That trans dipstick update is for real. There is still (at least list time I paid attention) a large black mark in the pavement where my Suburban roasted on I-35 in Oklahoma, in front of the rest area at mile marker 5. That's an interesting way to wake up, when someone else is driving.
The updated stick and tube also uses a boot style seal, instead of the older o-ring seal. I have had a few of them, that is the only real problem I have had.

Why was the trans overheating in the first place.. didn't they come with factory coolers?

I think it was time for a new trans. I had just bought the truck, and hadn't really shook it down before I took off. Looking back on it, it's funny now. Not so much when it happened. It was kinda pricy. I guess there was a reason I bought it so cheap.
IIRC, it did have a trans cooler. I was towing a car dolly, so that might have helped, too.

Weird though.. I guess it could happen on any c10 too? I wonder why the issue was limited to burbs, if it was.
That's my only concern. Otherwise I'm on board with a 4x4 burb and the search has begun! |

Maybe it was just found later on, and adressed in the later R & V models. I wouldn't let that deter me from a purchase, teh parts to fix it are probably less than $40 (tube, dipstick, and seal).

I know my 1991 does not have a factory trans cooler. The cooler on the front for mine atleast was an oil cooler. Trans cooling is done stock through the rad. Which is kinda dumb for a 4l80e IMHO
