Small back window question
Hey guys,
So I used to have a truck on here a few years back and know quite a bit about them. Anyways I am in the market for a 67-72 short fleet and came across a 69 on craiglist in the SF bay area that has a small back window. I wrote the owner asking if the cab was swapped or the front clip or what the deal was do to the small rear window. He told me, it is a correct year 69 small back window cab because Cal-Trans (California department of transportation) could order them like that and that's what the body shop or something told him. So anyways I was just curious if to anyone had a knowledge regarding something like this... Thanks guys |

Re: Small back window question
I've worked on and around these trucks for many years and I've never seen other than a 1967 with a small back window. The '67 could be bought with a "panoramic" (read that as "big") rear window, but many, many of the '67s were small back window.
Someone with more information might shed some light on the "Cal Trans Story", but IMHO I think it's a story the current owner has been told. However, that doesn't make it necessarily true!!

Re: Small back window question
Ask for pictures of the dash. 67's have unique dashes as well (smaller ignition hole and a couple other small things I can't think of right now )
His story doesn't make sense. I could see maybe an early 68 that ened up with a small window cab, but a cab left over until 69? I highly doubt GM stamped out a small window cab for one company.

Check and see where the emergency brake is located. 67's were under the steering column and were operated by hand and 69's were on the left side kick panel and were foot operated. The ignition switch bezel on the '67 is 1 5/8" dia and the '69 would be 2 1/4" dia. LockDoc

Re: Small back window question
The ad says it's a 1969 frame and the door plate has been replaced by the CHP referee... I think he's allowing himself some wiggle room, maybe the cab was replaced with a '67 cab.
He also says Eaton posi. Eaton diffs were 3/4T & 1T, but did they also make a posi for 1/2T diffs?

Re: Small back window question
eaton is still around and makes aftermarket parts for the 12 bolt rear, so that is probably what he's talking about there.
As far as the whole small window and stuff, the cab was obviously swapped and stuff. Why would the CHP install a new plate if it was legit? He's either repeating the bogus story he was told, or he is blowing smoke. |

Re: Small back window question
I call B.S. on this one. I am thinking it had a 67 cab put on at some point and that maybe that was how they made the title the match legally. It may be a 69 truck, but it has a 67 cab...

Re: Small back window question
Man this guy is getting pissed LOL
When i asked for the vin pic, this is what he asked... HIM: See attached. Are you just curious and have a stepside now, or are you a buyer? ME: Both, do you have any pics of the dash? Thanks for the pic.. HIM:I'm done with you. You should have asked for a pix of the dash when you asked for a pix of the blue plate. I got better things to do. ME:I just want to know what I am looking at... Fine does Is the e-brake foot operated or hand?? I already have a 67, I am looking for a 69 right now. Did you build the truck or did you buy it done?? I am just trying to get some history before I drive all the way out there to look at it. HIM:stop!!!!!

Re: Small back window question
If I were selling something, and an interested buyer had questions, I would be happy to accommodate him. Either something is fishy or the guy is just a jerk. In my opinion, of course...

Re: Small back window question
I say he's getting pissed because he knows he full of "you know what." What he's trying to do is make it seem as if he has some sort of really rare truck. Not knowing he has run into a knowledgeable buyer and his plan has been foiled. I'm not as knowledgeable as many of the guys on here, but small windows only came on 67's.

Re: Small back window question
here is some more..
after he told me to stop.. ME:If you were about to spend almost 8k on a truck wouldn't you want to know some info on it? Just so you know that is a 67 cab. Sorry its not a rare 69. Thanks anyway HIM: I apologize if I seemed a little gruff. I have been getting calls from scammers and consignment houses, publications, Ebay, etc. just to mention a few, offering to sell my truck for me. I have been a commercial truck fleet manager, for the past 14 years. Govt, political subdivisions, municipalities, school districts, fire departments, etc. are able to order SEO's or Special Equipment Options that are not available to the general public. I was led to believe by a very well known, long established automotive shop that specializes in collector cars and trucks that my truck is an ex Cal Trans truck. The owner of this shop still owns a 1972 Chevy stepside big block #'s matching. It really doesn't matter to me if it is or is not the cab it came with from the factory. I am only repeating what I thought was credible information from a reputable source I respect. I see Barrett Jackson/ Russo & Steele quality cars in their shop for upgrades all the time. I have not found information to the contrary. Other than, the small window cab was only offered to the general public in 1967.

Interpretation: I am backpedaling a bit and am now willing to talk with you, because I have no other serious buyers....

Re: Small back window question
[QUOTE=I am just trying to get some history before I drive all the way out there to look at it.QUOTE]
1st Off welcome to the Forum. Looks like you've got some "Local" input here. I see YOUR from Ukiah, and then Santa Rosa, pops in and now ME in Cobb! I thought I was the ONLY one that used the above quoted reference. Another good one, is...... "I need larger Pictures for detail due to C.L Bandwidth". You know I can't believe people on C.L. Even when you tell em' it's a 3 Hour drive (one way), how many say... "Just come look at it. You wont be sorry". I think a lot of it stems from Communities/People being so close together in the Bay Area. Just hop on the Freway and I'll see you in 15 minutes. You can even get away with that in Santa Rosa and Ukiah, because you can get onto 101 and head South. Here in Cobb, I've gotta go down Cobb Mtn to Middletown and then down Mt. St. Helena, before I BEGIN to get close to the Bay Area, or drive 50 miles from Clearlake to Hwy 5 before I can go South or North (Depending on location) to see a vehicle. Here's a perfect example: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/1578885541.html If I was looking for a Truck, well THIS one would get my attention. After I pressed him for pictures of all (4) Corners, Under The Hood and Interior, I saw that the Tailgate, there's a 24" GASH across the Paint where it's peeling up! (see attached picture). I'm no painter, but I don't know HOW you could "Touch-up/Blend it in, without some MAJOR Body Shop $$. He's wanting to Trade or at LEAST $10K for it. Personally, I don't think it's worth $10K, but that's just my .02 Cents worth.

Re: Small back window question
The above pic shows different wheels than the big wheels in the ad. And you can't see the gash in the pics in the ad. Weird. Also, the tail lights look like the cheap autozone lights and they are put on with a painted plate. Screwed on or pop riveted. Its a nice truck otherwise.

Re: Small back window question
This post wasn't to upset a seller or pick on people. I just feel I am pretty well versed on these trucks as I have been obsessed with them for the better part of 15 years. Small back window cab or big back window, swapped or not I would pay for the right truck. I just wanted to know the caltrans question lol.. If he he is actually mad at people for questioning it, then he is a ra-tard lol.. Anyways, thanks guys.. And I am planning on a purchase soon, I will def post pics and updates when I do..

Seems like another craigslist fiasco. He wants to sell but not supply enough information. looks like a nice truck but the paint job screams mini truck

Every two-bit tom dick and harry used car salesman can't resist dropping the name Barrett Jackson when talking about any car/truck built before 1975 that just happens to be in their possesion.
