I have a chance to purchase a 65 short step for I6, 3 on the tree for $2200. What would you do?

It looks like it's in pretty good shape, but I honestly wouldn't pay that much. From what I've seen, you can pick one up for less than 2200.

Re: What would you do?

Does it run, drive and stop properly? Does it have a title with matching VIN? Does it have any extra parts with it? Will it cost you to trailer or have it transported home? Does it have rust in the usual spots...rockers, cab corners, floor boards, kick panels, roof eyebrow, inner fenders, front fender tails, front cab supports, rear cab supports or rear fenders?

All of these things should be considered when purchasing one of these trucks. Whether they are a dime-a-dozen in your area or not, a good, sound daily driver with all or many of the above things in order, make this a decent puchase. As with any purchase of this type, try to purchase it for the lowest price possible.

He says it runs and drives well. No problem with title, VIN matches. I will have to travel 200mi to look at it. Then about $60 to rent a trailer to bring it back if purchased. No extra parts. He says a rocker has been replaced and only remaining rust in cab is on the drivers side floor which is shown in pic. There is rust in inner fender, rear fender and he says one side panel of the bed is "cheesy" Here in central Indiana, a truck like this can't be found.

Re: What would you do?

Since you have to travel to look at it in person and it will cost you $150.00-$200.00 in fuel & trailer rental and with the rust issues, I would offer $1,500.00, but set a limit you are willing to pay. At $1,500.00-$1,800.00, I think you will come out OK on the deal, considering your travel expenses.

In the midwest rust-belt, if is getting more and more difficult to find one that is not eaten up with rust, so I know what you mean...sodium chloride should be outlawed. Let us know what you do.

Re: What would you do?

I've spent $2,200 on dumber things that is for sure. Definently look over that sucker though. I traveled 300 miles to get mine and after a thorough investigation was not happy. The truck was nowhere near the condition described. A decent body shop guy can do wonders with a tub of Bondo buddy.

Re: What would you do?

If you buy them right in Cali and pay to have them shipped to the midwest, you have the same amount of money in them, than if you find a decent one in the midwest, so it is six-to-one/half-dozen-to-the-other!

If you have a good line on all these '60-'66 Chevy/GMC trucks, post a link to them on this site and they will get snatched up by those looking for rust-free trucks.

I wouldn't buy for more than the suggested $1500, at worst he declines the offer and a couple months later he'll contact you seeing if your still offering $1500

Re: What would you do?

The problem for me is, I'd likely buy that for 2K if its a driver.

I'm in Rustbelt, crappy roads, weather country and I search daily for 60-66 trucks, and its hard-pressed to find a decent, drivable truck for 2k anywhere around here..........

I see dozens of trucks on craiglook for 1600-3k that are what I consider great buys, but.....they're always so far away that shipping kills it for me.

Anyway, carry on.

I agree. I'm looking at buying a decent 60-66 to drive to work, haul my dirtbike, and tinker with on the weekends. It's getting hard to find a decent truck to start with around here it seems. Rust in my opinion is a major concern with these trucks. Joseph

Re: What would you do?

Well, I have sold my truck, so I am going to look at this one on Saturday. I will be taking the 70 3/4t and a flatbed.

Personally I dont think the price is bad. I did get him to $2100 with the replacement inner fender and no toolbox.

Personally I think if I could get it for 2k and it looks and runs like he says, it would be a good deal. I will be sure to snap some pics, if it comes home with me.

Re: What would you do?

No dice, so I am in the hunt for one.

This truck was by no means what he claimed. Front panel of the bed was toast at the bottom and both side fenders and bedsides were junk. The cab had multiple holes in it, the hood didnt fit right even after he slammed it 3 times. I could grab the steering shaft from under the hood and move it up and down, looked like a seal was missing in it.

So I'm out $100 for fuel, but still looking.

Chad

Keep your chin up Chad, I believe we all have been down that road a few times. I drove 2 hours to look at a hood and came back empty handed. The right one will come along. Keep digging.

Re: What would you do?

It looks scary to me. Pieced together. Who knows what under the repaint. Try to find an rust free original paint truck, history is easier to figure out.Remember, these trucks are hard to find with options that are common to 67 thru 72 era. You'll be so busy with mechanical upgrades on pre 67 trucks, the last thing you need is to be busy with a bondoed pieced together rust bugy.
