Re: Which rear end is everybody using?
If you want to know your gear ratio on a 10 bolt 8.5 which you have. Take the cover off and turn the ring gear until you see a set of numbers stamped on the edge of the gear this is the tooth counts for the ring and pinion. You divide those numbers and it will give you your gear ratio. For example if the numbers are 48:14 you divived 48 by 14 and it will give you 3.428 which is 3.43 gears.

Re: Which rear end is everybody using?
Or an even easier way to check gear ratio is to hold one axle shaft solid, spin the other axle shaft and count how many times the pinion rotates. 3.5 is 3.43's, 3.75 is 3.73's. This trick usually works well, especially if you don't want to open the axle up. If the axle has a locker then you don't have to hold one axle shaft solid.

Re: Which rear end is everybody using?
Does anyone know what rear end gear came in a 1983 S15? It had 2.8L V6 I believe.

Re: Which rear end is everybody using?
I have an S-10 Blazer rear in my truck. The S-10's came with 3 or 4 gear ratios and the optional factory locker. Only way besides counting teeth like Kabwe said, was to look at the build options on the glovebox of the truck. Mine was the GU6 (3:42's followed by G80 which is Posi) thats what I needed. As far as rearends that can take abuse the 9" design is king if you're making 900+ horsepower, anything less and I'd stick with the Chevy stuff. 10 and 12 bolts take 30 LESS horsepower to turn than the 9" (pinion angle on the ring and an extra pinion bearing) so if you have a mild motor, use the Chevy stuff and enjoy the extra HP and mileage! 12 bolts can be set up to be really tough and I know of a guy who ran 9's with a 10 bolt!

I believe 3.90 was the standard ratio in the stock half-ton rear in '55. You must have a calibrated eye to see 1.95 revolutions. I'd have trouble unless I measured things getting that accurate.
