new workshop!
Hey, just had to share, this my new garage/shop currently under construction, 28x30, 10 foot walls, one 16 foot and one 10 foot rollup doors. The 70 year old barn in one of the photos is what I have (or, more accurately, have not) been using.

Re: new workshop!
That's nice. Same size as mine except I only have 8' walls. Only thing I regret, I wish I would have added a second story for storage, or who knows what. I never checked but I don't think it would have added all that much to the price since most of the cost was the foundation.

Re: new workshop!
Don't demo the old barn....adds character.
One thing I did was to add a loft. It serves as great storage for lighter items. |

Re: new workshop!
I built a 24' wide and 30' deep, I wanted a second story for a mother-in-law - guest room/apt. but did not have the budget at the time, so I at least had them make the foundation for the added weight of a second story.
Of course it rained just about everyday for the 3months I wanted the cement guys to get on it, but I think it turned out well. One thing I learned is that when reading the building codes, read them twice, I ended up putting hurricane bracing and clip on every stud. did not cost any real money but wasted some time. When times get right, I'll have the roof taken off and asecond story room put on. When the Parish inspector came by to sign off on the build, he asked me if I was worried about the building falling down? Because there was no way in hell, short of a tornado that would so it and he was not sure about that even, see the pictures below. http://rides.webshots.com/album/548763031CfrpbJ

Re: new workshop!
garagejournal.com - a forum like this one ,but for garage/shop/barn owners to swap tips and lies
friendly folks. I hope you save the old barn/shed. check out this thread with lots of details and photos: west of Philly - barn saving This one is more comparable to your building, I think: Broken Old Garage Gets New Life Renovating Barns Sheds and Outbuildings by Nick... He recommended that book as well... and it turned out that it was in my local library. I checked it out and got about halfway through it.. very good reading. I had other things like school and work and no actual building to work on, so it had to go back to the library. Anyway, I have this compulsive thing about sharing information... cool building you have going there. -W |
